Match Preview
- A quirk of the calendar means both sides arrive at this Matchday 1 fixture having already played Matchday 2. Barcelona won 5-0 away at Elche to sit seventh on three points with a goal difference of +5, while Athletic Club were beaten 1-3 at home by Sevilla and lie 19th without a point. With Real Madrid already on six points from two games, Barcelona cannot afford to drop points in hand.
- Barcelona's 4-3-3 against Athletic's 4-2-3-1 puts the numbers game in midfield front and centre. Pedri, 23, controls tempo with his turns in tight areas, 19-year-old Marc Bernal offers a 193cm left-footed holding presence after returning from an ACL injury, and Fermin Lopez, 23, arrives late in the box having finished as top scorer at the Paris Olympics. Athletic counter with a young double pivot of Mikel Jauregizar, 22, and Peio Canales, 21, back at the club after enhancing his reputation on loan at Racing Santander.
- Lamine Yamal, still only 19, is the game's most obvious flashpoint. An inverted right winger who can cut inside and either shoot or thread a pass with his left foot, he made his senior debut at 15 and broke the youngest-appearance record at EURO 2024. Athletic's answer is 22-year-old French defender Ruiz Jean at 175cm, whose mobility down that flank will be tested from the opening whistle.
- Athletic's own game-breaker is Nico Williams, 24, a right-footed winger who attacks from the left and is close to unplayable in one-on-one duels, scoring in the EURO 2024 final on his way to being named player of the tournament. Barcelona's right-back Xavier Espart, a La Masia graduate who won a treble with the Juvenil A side and lifted the UEFA Youth League, faces the sternest assignment of his young career.
- Athletic's back line pairs two vastly experienced centre-backs. Aymeric Laporte, 32, won the Premier League and the Champions League at Manchester City, spent time at Al-Nassr and returned to the club where he made his name, and he was part of Spain's EURO 2024-winning squad. Alongside him is Yeray Alvarez, 31, an academy product whose one-on-one defending is the best in the squad. How often Laporte's left-footed long passing bypasses Barcelona's press will set the rhythm.
- Barcelona's left flank belongs to Anthony Gordon, the 25-year-old England forward. Right-footed but at home on the left, he drags defenders out of shape with explosive, direct running, and he scored in both legs of the 2025 EFL Cup semi-final to help Newcastle end a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy. His pressing and defensive work rate will be tested against right-back Hugo Rincon, 23, who has previous top-flight experience at Girona.
- Up front, the understanding between captain Inaki Williams, 32, and Gorka Guruzeta, 29, is central to Athletic's plan. Inaki holds a La Liga consecutive-appearance record and sets the tone with his pressing and selflessness, while the 188cm Guruzeta grew into the club's first-choice striker after loan spells at Sabadell and Amorebieta and helped win the Copa del Rey with his aerial ability and hold-up play. Their runs in behind will probe a high Barcelona line marshalled by 19-year-old Pau Cubarsi and Eric Garcia, 25.
- The goalkeeping duel is worth the admission alone. Joan Garcia, 25 and 193cm, once posted a league-high save tally at Espanyol, is exceptional from close range and was part of the gold-medal-winning side at the Paris Olympics. Unai Simon, 29 and 190cm, is Spain's first-choice keeper with a long list of big-match credentials including his shoot-out heroics at EURO 2020. Wojciech Szczesny, 36, waits on the Barcelona bench.
- Robert Navarro, 24, faces a personal subplot from the Athletic bench. He came through Barcelona's academy, set a club record as Monaco's youngest debutant, scored 11 goals for Real Sociedad B under Xabi Alonso and now finds himself a substitute at the ground where his football education began.
- The benches could decide a tight night. Barcelona hold back Dani Olmo, 28, who was EURO 2024's top scorer and returned to La Masia via Dinamo Zagreb and RB Leipzig, Jules Kounde, 27, a Europa League winner with Sevilla, and Karim Adeyemi, 24, formerly of Red Bull Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund. Athletic can turn to Alex Berenguer, 31, with Torino and Osasuna behind him, and the 192cm Morocco international Maroan Sannadi, 25.
