Match Preview
- Real Sociedad arrive rock bottom in 20th, with no points and a minus-four goal difference from their opening two fixtures. They were beaten 4-1 away at Real Madrid on matchday one and 1-0 away at Real Betis on matchday two. Both of those games were on the road, which makes this their first home outing of the campaign, and with leaders Alaves already on seven points from three, the gap is worth watching early.
- Espanyol travel in 10th on three points, having won one and lost one. They opened with a 3-0 home win over Levante before pushing Real Madrid close in a 1-2 home defeat. Four goals scored and only two conceded gives them a plus-two goal difference, but this is their first away assignment of the season and a very different test.
- Urko Gonzalez, 25, lines up in Espanyol's double pivot against the club that raised him: he came through the Real Sociedad academy before making his loan move to Espanyol permanent in 2025. At 186cm he can operate as either a holding midfielder or a centre-back, combining aerial presence with clean distribution, and this is a return to familiar surroundings.
- The midfield shape is the central tactical question, with Sociedad's 4-4-2 up against Espanyol's 4-2-3-1. Carlos Soler, 34, formerly of Valencia, Paris Saint-Germain and West Ham, works inside alongside academy graduate Beñat Turrientes, with Ander Barrenetxea and Croatia international Luka Sucic, a Red Bull Salzburg product, on the flanks. Espanyol counter with just two holders in Edu Exposito, 30, previously of Deportivo and Eibar, and Urko Gonzalez.
- Sociedad's front two pairs captain Mikel Oyarzabal, 29, who scored the winning goal in the Euro 2024 final, with 186cm Iceland striker Orri Oskarsson, signed from FC Copenhagen for a club-record 20 million euros. Espanyol's answer is a physically imposing centre-back pairing of 186cm Unai Nunez, an Athletic Club academy graduate, and 188cm Slovenia international Vanja Drkusic, so aerial duels should be fiercely contested.
- Japan international Takefusa Kubo starts on the bench. The 25-year-old right winger is left-footed, thriving on close control and incisive final passes, and reached San Sebastian via FC Tokyo, Real Madrid and loan spells at Mallorca, Villarreal and Getafe. For a side still without a point, he is the obvious game-changer to introduce if the hosts need to force the issue.
- Both goalkeepers bring serious pedigree. Alex Remiro, 31 and 192cm, is a Euro 2024 winner with more than 300 appearances for Sociedad, having previously played for Athletic Club, Levante and Huesca. Espanyol field 194cm Serbia international Marko Dmitrovic, 34, a Europa League winner during his Sevilla days who is left-footed in possession and has a reputation as a penalty stopper. With five goals already conceded, Sociedad need Remiro at his best.
- The full-back battles could decide the width of the game. Sergio Gomez, 25, is a Barcelona academy product who has since played for Borussia Dortmund, Anderlecht and Manchester City, where he collected six trophies, and his left foot supplies the crosses. Opposite him, Jon Aramburu covers the right flank as a Venezuela international with a huge engine, while Espanyol's 22-year-old Omar El Hilali is a homegrown right-back who twice turned down Barcelona to stay.
- The benches offer plenty of late-game influence. Sociedad can call on Portugal forward Goncalo Guedes, a veteran of Benfica, PSG and Valencia, Venezuela midfielder Yangel Herrera, who broke through at Girona after time at Manchester City, and Russian playmaker Arsen Zakharyan. Espanyol have 20-year-old Gabriel Moscardo, on loan from Paris Saint-Germain after 39 appearances for Braga and a run to the Europa League semi-finals, plus Netherlands left-back Quilindschy Hartman, an Eredivisie champion with Feyenoord.
