Match Preview
- Eighteenth-placed Rayo Vallecano host Racing Santander, who sit 11th. Three matches in, Rayo are still without a win, have taken just one point and have shipped eight goals for a -4 goal difference. The promoted visitors have a win, a draw and a defeat for four points and a level goal difference, so they arrive three points clear of their hosts. Barcelona have already set the pace at the top with nine points and a +10 goal difference from three games.
- The routes here have been very different. Rayo lost 2-1 at Sevilla on the opening weekend, drew 1-1 at home with Alaves and were beaten 5-2 at Barcelona in round three. Racing drew 2-2 at home with Villarreal, lost 1-0 at Getafe and then claimed their first win by edging Elche 3-2 at home, settling quickly into a top flight they had not seen for 14 years.
- The sharpest subplot is on Rayo's left flank, where Alvaro Garcia faces one of his former clubs. The 33-year-old winger stands just 167cm but still shreds full-backs with his dribbling and pace, and beyond his spell at Racing Santander he has also played for Cadiz, Granada and San Fernando. He now holds Rayo's club record for La Liga appearances, and his left-footed crossing and cut-ins remain the first thing any opponent has to plan for.
- Racing's fulcrum is Sergio Canales, a 35-year-old born in Santander itself. After Real Madrid, Valencia, Real Sociedad, Real Betis and a stint at Monterrey in Mexico, his return to his home-town club was the signing of their summer, and he takes the penalties, free-kicks and corners. His reading of the game remains intact. Opposing him is Rayo captain Oscar Valentin, a defensive midfielder who climbed from the lower divisions via Rayo Majadahonda.
- Set pieces may be Racing's most reliable weapon. Inigo Vicente, who produced nine goals and 21 assists in the promotion campaign, shares dead-ball duties with Canales and brings the tight-space technique typical of an Athletic Bilbao graduate. Ivan Martin adds another left-footed deliverer from deep, having built his reputation as Girona's chance creator. Rayo will look to the 189cm Florian Lejeune, 35, and the 186cm Pathe Ciss to win the first contacts.
- Rayo's 4-3-3 against Racing's 4-2-3-1 makes the midfield count the key question. Rayo field Unai Lopez, the 170cm Athletic Bilbao academy technician, alongside the combative Valentin and Pedro Diaz, who spent time abroad with Bordeaux. Racing sit Ivan Martin in a double pivot and let Canales drift into the space in front of it, so which of the Rayo three picks him up will shape the flow of the match.
- Rayo attack with speed. Sergio Camello, wearing the No.10, came through Atletico Madrid's academy and thrives on runs in behind and clean finishing. On the right, Jorge de Frutos was schooled at Real Madrid Castilla and returned to Rayo after three seasons at Levante that brought 112 appearances and 13 goals. Waiting for them are Facundo Gonzalez, the 193cm Uruguayan centre-back signed permanently from Juventus, the ever-present Jose Hernando, and 19-year-old local left-back Jorge Salinas.
- Racing lead the line with Yassir Sabiri, a 21-year-old Moroccan on loan from Rennes whose pace, mobility and decision-making in the final third mark him as a work in progress gathering minutes. How he handles a defence that includes the 35-year-old Lejeune is one of the more instructive duels on the night. Behind Rayo's back four stands Dani Cardenas, the 29-year-old Levante academy product comfortable enough with his feet to start attacks.
- In the other goal is Julen Agirrezabala, the 25-year-old left-footed keeper who came through Athletic Bilbao and helped them win the Copa del Rey in 2023-24, and he will want to tighten things up after five goals conceded in three matches. Rayo can turn to a useful bench too: Alemao, the Brazilian forward who drove Real Oviedo's promotion push and has also played for Kyoto Sanga, and Georgia international Giorgi Tsitaishvili, a left-footed right winger formerly of Dynamo Kyiv and Lech Poznan.
