Match Preview
- Real Madrid are fourth with nine points from four matches, three wins and one defeat, having scored 10 and conceded only three for a +7 goal difference. They opened with three straight victories before slipping to a 1-0 loss at Real Betis in round four, their first of the campaign. Barcelona already lead on 12 points with a +15 goal difference, so dropping points at home would be costly in a title race that is threatening to run away early.
- Rayo Vallecano arrive 14th on four points, having won one, drawn one and lost two while conceding 10 goals in four games. They were beaten 5-2 away at Barcelona in round three, then responded by edging Racing Santander 3-2 at home for their first win of the season. Having faced one Spanish heavyweight two matches ago, they now take on the other with the leakiest record in the top half.
- Kylian Mbappe leads the Madrid line, the 27-year-old France forward whose runs in behind and right-footed finishing decide matches on their own. Rayo will try to contain him with an improvised centre-back pairing: Pathe Ciss, the 32-year-old Senegal international and Africa Cup of Nations winner who is a defensive midfielder by trade, alongside 35-year-old Florian Lejeune, the 189cm Frenchman with Newcastle and Alaves behind him. Tracking Mbappe's movement will be the toughest assignment either defender has faced this season.
- The midfield contrast is just as stark. Madrid pair Bernardo Silva, the 32-year-old Portugal international who was regarded as one of the Premier League's least dispossessed players at Manchester City, with Federico Valverde, the Uruguayan whose relentless running and long-range shooting drive transitions. Rayo's answer is Unai Lopez, a 170cm Athletic Bilbao academy graduate who keeps possession in tight areas. Two diminutive technicians will decide who sets the tempo.
- Alvaro Garcia remains Rayo's emblem. The 33-year-old left winger holds the club's LaLiga appearance record and, at just 167cm, still beats defenders with sharp dribbling and left-footed crosses. He goes directly up against Denzel Dumfries, the 188cm Netherlands right-back signed from Inter who scored against Argentina in the 2022 World Cup quarter-final. The physical mismatch of more than 20 centimetres makes this the most intriguing duel on that flank.
- On the other wing, Georgia international Giorgi Tsitaishvili offers a different threat. The 171cm, left-footed 25-year-old came through Dynamo Kyiv and has played for Lech Poznan, Dinamo Batumi, Granada and Metz, cutting inside to shoot. His marker is Alvaro Fernandez, the 23-year-old left-back who moved through Granada, Preston, Manchester United and Benfica before returning to Madrid, where he came through. At 186cm and left-footed, Fernandez likes to push high, which could leave space behind him.
- The youngest starter on the pitch is Madrid's 19-year-old Yan Diomande. Born in Abidjan, he arrived in Europe via the United States, made his LaLiga debut at Leganes and moved to RB Leipzig in 2025, and already has three goals in 10 caps for Ivory Coast. His explosive pace and direct dribbling will be tested by Adria Pedrosa, the 28-year-old left-back on loan from Sevilla who made more than 100 appearances across LaLiga and Segunda with Espanyol.
- Jude Bellingham operates behind Mbappe, and at 186cm the 23-year-old remains one of the most dangerous late arrivals into the box in Europe, a habit built at Birmingham City and Borussia Dortmund. On the left, Vinicius Junior looks to isolate Andrei Ratiu, the 28-year-old Romania right-back from Villarreal's academy whose greatest asset is his running power going forward. How high Ratiu can push without being exposed will largely determine whether Rayo can counter at all.
- In goal, Thibaut Courtois brings 200cm of presence and the pedigree of spells at Genk, Atletico Madrid and Chelsea, plus accurate left-footed distribution that makes him a first phase of Madrid's build-up. Rayo start the 190cm Italian goalkeeper Audero, with Dani Cardenas, the 29-year-old Levante academy product who has been their regular number one, dropping to the bench. Given 10 goals conceded in four rounds, that selection carries weight.
- The benches underline the gulf. Madrid can introduce Trent Alexander-Arnold, a Premier League and Champions League winner with Liverpool whose delivery is world class, the 187cm holding midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, 20-year-old Endrick, who holds Brazil's youngest-scorer record, and the 195cm Dean Huijsen. Rayo counter with captain Oscar Valentin, who climbed from the lower divisions, the 191cm Albania centre-back Marash Kumbulla, and Brazilian striker Alemao, a former Kyoto Sanga forward who topped the scoring charts level in Segunda with Real Oviedo.
