Match Preview
- Two sides level on seven points meet here. Real Sociedad sit 11th after five matches with a 2-1-2 record, six goals scored and eight conceded for a minus-two difference. Atletico Madrid are ninth on the same seven points from a game fewer, having won two, drawn one and lost one with a plus-one difference. Barcelona have already pulled clear on 15 points from five, so neither side can afford to drop more ground.
- Sociedad's opening month has swung wildly. They lost 4-1 away to Real Madrid on matchday one and 1-0 at Real Betis on matchday two, then recovered to beat Espanyol 2-1 at home and edge Elche 3-2 on the road. Their most recent outing was a goalless home draw with Celta Vigo. Six goals scored and eight conceded in five games points to problems at both ends of the pitch.
- Atletico have been no more consistent. A 2-0 home win over Malaga was followed by a 2-2 draw with Villarreal, then a 3-1 victory at Sevilla, and then a 0-3 hammering away at Athletic Club on matchday four. That away-day volatility is the first thing to watch: the visitors have produced both their best and worst football of the season on the road.
- The shape battle is a 4-2-3-1 against a 3-4-2-1. Sociedad field Gonçalo Guedes, Luka Sucic and Ander Barrenetxea behind captain Mikel Oyarzabal, whose left foot delivered the winning goal in the EURO 2024 final. Atletico counter with a back three of David Hancko, Cristian Romero and Marc Pubill, trusting wing-backs Alex Grimaldo and Giuliano Simeone to cover the full length of the flanks.
- The midfield base could decide it. Sociedad pair Carlos Soler, a former Valencia and Paris Saint-Germain man who doubles as a set-piece taker, with Yangel Herrera, the Venezuela international box-to-box runner who came through Manchester City. Atletico answer with Morten Hjulmand, the 185cm Denmark international signed from Sporting CP who captained both Lecce and Sporting, screening for the relentless running of Real Madrid academy graduate Marcos Llorente.
- Atletico's two attacking midfielders are Alex Baena, a former La Liga assists leader who won the Europa League with Villarreal, and Lee Kang-in, the left-footed South Korea international schooled in Valencia's academy whose dribble success rate ranks among Europe's best. Ahead of them is Ademola Lookman, the Nigeria forward who scored a hat-trick in a Europa League final. Their ability to combine in tight spaces is the away side's main route to goal.
- Sociedad's back line is notably young. Mamadou Sarr, the 21-year-old, 194cm Senegal centre-back who arrived via Strasbourg and Chelsea, partners academy product Luken Beitia in the middle. Sergio Gomez, a left-footed full-back who has passed through Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City, takes the left. Dealing with the 188cm Hancko and 185cm Romero at set pieces will be a real test.
- Robin Le Normand returns to face his former club from the Atletico bench. The 187cm centre-back, French-born but a Spain international and part of the EURO 2024-winning squad, spent years anchoring the Real Sociedad defence before moving to Madrid. If Diego Simeone turns to him, he will find himself marking players he lined up alongside not long ago.
- Japan international Takefusa Kubo starts on the bench. The 25-year-old right winger, whose left foot and close control have driven Sociedad's attack, came through FC Tokyo before joining Real Madrid and spending loan spells at Mallorca, Villarreal and Getafe. In a match that could become a stalemate, he is the obvious card to change the rhythm from the sideline.
- The goalkeeping matchup is a strong one. Alex Remiro, the 192cm Sociedad number one who came through Athletic Club and spent time at Levante, is a EURO 2024 winner known for his command of crosses and accurate distribution. Jan Oblak, the 33-year-old Slovenia international opposite him, remains among La Liga's finest for reflexes and positioning. In a tight game, one save may settle it.
