Match Preview
- The table tells two very different stories. Villarreal are 18th on two points, still without a win after two draws and two defeats from four matches with a goal difference of -2. Real Betis are seventh on nine points, three wins from four, and arrive seven points clear of their hosts. With Barcelona setting the pace on 15 points from five games, Villarreal badly need a first victory of the campaign to change the mood.
- Villarreal's results have not matched their performances. They opened with 2-2 draws away at Racing Santander and at Atletico Madrid, then lost 1-0 at Alaves and 3-2 at home to Deportivo La Coruna. Eight goals conceded in four games underline the problem, and much rests on 36-year-old Peter Gulacsi, signed from RB Leipzig in August 2026 after 296 Bundesliga appearances and 96 clean sheets, to organise the line in front of him.
- Betis have been a study in extremes. Their three wins, 1-0 away at Valencia, 1-0 at home to Real Sociedad and, most notably, 1-0 against Real Madrid in matchday four, all came by a single goal without conceding. Their only defeat was a 5-2 hammering at Levante, which accounts for every single goal they have shipped this season. Five scored, five conceded, and almost nothing in between.
- Villarreal's 4-4-2 against Betis' 4-2-3-1 frames the midfield contest. The hosts pack the centre with the 188cm Santi Comesana, who made 219 appearances across seven seasons at Rayo Vallecano, and the left-footed 189cm Senegal international Pape Gueye, formerly of Marseille and Sevilla, with Canada's Tajon Buchanan, an ex-Inter man, and 31-year-old Nicolas Pepe outside them. Betis answer with the double pivot of Marc Roca and Pablo Fornals.
- Lurking between those lines is Isco. At 34, the playmaker who won four Champions League titles with Real Madrid remains the side's creative hub, capable of turning in tight spaces and slicing a flat back four open. Villarreal's 4-4-2 tends to leave room between its two banks, so the number of times Isco receives facing forward behind Comesana and Gueye may decide how many chances Betis create.
- Betis field two men with Villarreal on their CV. Pablo Fornals, 30, starts in midfield having made his name at the Yellow Submarine before a spell at West Ham, bringing close control and a huge workrate. On the bench sits Argentina's Giovani Lo Celso, also 30 and another former Villarreal player, whose left foot supplies precise through balls and shots from range.
- Villarreal have their own reunion on the bench. Ayoze Perez, 33, previously played for Betis and built a Premier League career at Newcastle and Leicester before returning to Spain. The Spain international scored 19 goals to finish as Villarreal's top scorer in his first season at the club, and his movement in the box makes him an obvious option if the hosts need to chase the game.
- The home strike pairing carries genuine threat. Georges Mikautadze, 25, has moved through Metz, Ajax and Lyon and pushed for the Golden Boot at Euro 2024, thriving on runs in behind. Alongside him is captain Gerard Moreno, 34, whose left foot has produced more than 120 La Liga goals and helped deliver the club's Europa League triumph. Marc Bartra, 35, and left-footed Brazilian Natan form the centre-back pairing tasked with containing them.
- The full-backs could tilt the game. Betis have Hector Bellerin, 31, whose sprinting power was a hallmark of his long Arsenal career, and the 169cm Fran Garcia, a Real Madrid academy product who broke through at Rayo Vallecano. Villarreal counter with Carlos Romero, 24, a left-footed set-piece specialist who managed two goals in 34 La Liga games in 2024-25, and Sofiane Mourhino, 24, who has passed through Atletico Madrid, Alaves and Zaragoza.
- Both benches offer game-changers. Betis can introduce Antony, the 26-year-old left-footed Brazilian who won back-to-back Eredivisie titles with Ajax before a 95 million euro move to Manchester United, Dani Ceballos, 30, schooled at Real Madrid and Arsenal, and the 185cm Republic of Ireland striker Troy Parrott. Villarreal have La Masia graduate Ilias Akhomach, a 22-year-old Morocco international, and Alberto Moleiro, who was playing first-team football at Las Palmas aged 17.
