Match Preview
- Bottom-placed Elche, 20th with just two points from five matches (0W-2D-3L, six scored and 13 conceded for a -7 goal difference), host second-placed Real Madrid, who have 12 points from four wins and one defeat with a +10 difference. The visitors trail leaders Barcelona (15 points) by three, so anything less than a win here would be costly.
- Elche's problem so far has been at home. They were beaten 5-0 by Barcelona in round two and lost 3-2 to Real Sociedad in round four, both in front of their own supporters, while both of their points came on the road: 1-1 at Deportivo La Coruna on the opening day and 1-1 at Athletic Club in round five. This is their second home date of the season against one of Spain's heavyweights.
- Victor Chust faces the club that made him. The 26-year-old right-footed centre-back came through Real Madrid's academy and Castilla before breaking into the first-team squad, and is now at Elche on loan from Cadiz. Valued for his composure on the ball and his reading of the game, he will be the man asked to organise a back line against Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior.
- Madrid arrive with four wins in five. They put four past Real Sociedad (4-1) on matchday one, Malaga (4-0) in round three and Rayo Vallecano (4-1) in round five - four goals in each of their three home games. Their only slip was a 1-0 defeat away at Real Betis in round four, so consistency away from home is the theme of this visit.
- The 4-2-3-1 up front is loaded: Mbappe, 27 and a former PSG and Monaco forward, leads the line, Vinicius Junior starts from the left and 21-year-old Arda Guler, the left-footed ex-Fenerbahce playmaker, operates behind the striker. On the right is 19-year-old Yan Diomande, who made his name at Leganes and already has three goals in 10 caps for Ivory Coast with his direct, vertical dribbling.
- The midfield battle is a numbers game. Madrid pair Aurelien Tchouameni - 187cm, formerly of Monaco and Bordeaux - with Federico Valverde, the 28-year-old Uruguayan who spent time at Deportivo La Coruna. Elche answer with a five-man band in their 4-5-1: academy graduate Gonzalo Villar, who played for AS Roma, ball-winner Marc Aguado from Zaragoza's youth system, and 23-year-old Benfica product Martim Neto.
- Elche's back four is young and improvised. Right-back Buba Sangare is only 19, having set Levante's youngest-debutant record at 16 before a spell at AS Roma, while 188cm Federico Redondo - a natural holding midfielder who arrived from Inter Miami via Argentinos Juniors - drops into the centre. Against the pace of Mbappe and Vinicius, their line-holding and covering will decide how open this becomes.
- There is a striking contrast between the two goals. Elche trust 39-year-old Argentine Mariano Dituro, a Zamora Trophy winner in Segunda in 2024-25 who helped drive their promotion. Madrid have 200cm Thibaut Courtois behind a distinctly Premier League-flavoured defence: Liverpool old boys Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate, 195cm Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth, and ex-Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella.
- The benches could decide it. Madrid can call on Jude Bellingham, Bernardo Silva of Manchester City fame, Eduardo Camavinga, Brahim Diaz, 20-year-old Endrick, Antonio Rudiger and Denzel Dumfries. Elche's options are more modest but experienced: France international Thomas Lemar, whose left foot was honed at Monaco and Atletico Madrid, Argentina's Facundo Buonanotte from Brighton, and 36-year-old club servant Josan.
