Match Preview
- Rayo Vallecano arrive 16th with four points from five matches (1W 1D 3L) and a goal difference of -6, while Espanyol sit eighth on seven points with a +3 difference. Barcelona are already pulling clear at the top on 15 points, and with Villarreal 18th on two points, Rayo have only a two-point cushion above the drop zone. The two sides have not met yet this season, and the stakes could hardly be more different.
- Both teams have scored exactly eight goals, but the defensive records diverge sharply. Rayo have shipped 14 in five games, including a 5-2 loss at Barcelona on matchday three and a 4-1 defeat at Real Madrid on matchday five. Espanyol have conceded just five, keeping clean sheets in a 3-0 home win over Levante on the opening weekend and a 2-0 victory away at Osasuna last time out.
- Rayo's only win came at home, 3-2 against Racing Santander on matchday four, and they also drew 1-1 with Alaves at Vallecas. Away from home it has been three defeats from three, at Sevilla, Barcelona and Real Madrid. Turning their unbeaten home record into points against a mid-table side is exactly the kind of result their season needs.
- Left-back Adria Pedrosa faces his former club. The 28-year-old, on loan at Rayo from Sevilla, made over 100 appearances for Espanyol across LaLiga and the Segunda, and brings accurate crossing and attacking overlaps down the left. Rayo also have another ex-Espanyol man on the bench in Marash Kumbulla, the 191cm Albania international centre-back who had a loan spell at Espanyol and previously played for Roma.
- This is a 4-2-3-1 against 4-2-3-1, so the double pivots will decide who controls the tempo. Rayo pair 32-year-old Senegal international Pathe Ciss, a 186cm Africa Cup of Nations winner, with Athletic Bilbao academy product Unai Lopez, 30 and just 170cm but superb in tight areas. Espanyol counter with 20-year-old Brazilian anchor Gabriel Moscardo, on loan from Paris Saint-Germain after 39 appearances for Braga last season, alongside the 186cm Urko Gonzalez from the Real Sociedad academy.
- The wide duels should be lively. Álvaro García, 33 and only 167cm, holds Rayo's club record for LaLiga appearances and operates on the left, while left-footed Georgia international Giorgi Tsitaishvili attacks from the right after spells at Dynamo Kyiv, Lech Poznan, Dinamo Batumi and Metz. Espanyol's left-back Quilindschy Hartman, the 24-year-old Netherlands international who won the Eredivisie with Feyenoord, is strong in one-v-one duels and eager to push forward.
- Rayo's number ten Sergio Camello is an Atletico Madrid academy graduate who earned a permanent move after his loan spell, thriving on runs in behind and clinical finishing. He is up against a contrasting centre-back pairing: 35-year-old Uruguayan Leandro Cabrera, a 190cm left-footer with long service at Atletico and Getafe, and 23-year-old Carlos Riedel, who came through at Darmstadt 98 in Germany.
- Espanyol's 186cm striker Roberto Fernandez, 24, is on loan from Braga after making his name at Malaga and spending time at Barcelona B, and he scored the winner on his debut for the club. His aerial battle with Florian Lejeune will be key: the 189cm Frenchman is 35 and has played for Manchester City, Newcastle United and Alaves, marshalling the Rayo back line with reading of the game rather than pace.
- The goalkeeping matchup is worth watching too. Marko Dmitrovic, the 194cm Serbia international, won the Europa League with Sevilla and is a left-footed keeper comfortable in build-up as well as a noted penalty stopper. Rayo hand the gloves to the 190cm Italian-born Audero, 29, who has a defence that has already conceded 14 goals in five matches to protect.
- Both benches carry game-changers. Rayo can call on club captain Oscar Valentin, a 32-year-old defensive midfielder who climbed up from the lower divisions, Brazilian striker Alemao, 28, formerly of Kyoto Sanga and Real Oviedo, and Valencia academy winger Fran Perez, 24. Espanyol counter with Pol Lozano, the 26-year-old defensive midfielder who wears the number ten, and Edu Exposito, 30, a technical midfielder shaped by his years at Deportivo and Eibar.
