Match Preview
- Only one point separates these sides: Sevilla sit sixth on 10 points (3-1-1, GD +2) while promoted Deportivo are seventh on nine (2-3-0, GD +3) and still unbeaten after five matches. Barcelona lead the way with 15 points from five games, so both clubs treat this as a chance to stay within touching distance of the top.
- Deportivo have yet to lose. Draws against Elche (1-1) and Malaga (1-1) opened the campaign before a 3-1 home win over Valencia, then a wild 3-2 victory away at Villarreal in round four. A 1-1 draw at Getafe followed, leaving them with nine goals scored and six conceded — the profile of a side that competes everywhere but has to turn draws into wins.
- Sevilla beat Rayo Vallecano 2-1 on the opening weekend and then produced the statement result of their start, winning 3-1 at Athletic Club's San Mames. A 1-3 home defeat to Atletico Madrid checked their momentum, but a 1-1 draw at Espanyol and a 1-0 home win over Valencia restored order. Eight scored, six conceded — repeating that clean sheet is the template here.
- There is a clear reunion storyline. Deportivo midfielder Luis Cruz, 25, came through Sevilla's academy before building his game at Tenerife and pushing further forward; he also takes free kicks and corners. Backup goalkeeper Alvaro Fernandez, 28, spent time at Sevilla too after spells with Huesca, Osasuna and Brentford, so two members of the home squad face familiar surroundings.
- Deportivo's front two pairs 37-year-old Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with Bill Nsongo, the striker whose goals drove the promotion push. Signed from Marseille, Aubameyang brings the pedigree of Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal and Barcelona, still runs the channels sharply and takes the penalties, while Nsongo links play and presses from the front — a contrast of experience and energy up top.
- The 4-4-2 against 4-2-3-1 battle will be settled in central midfield. Deportivo field Lorenzo Amatucci, the 22-year-old Fiorentina-schooled holding midfielder recruited after a standout Segunda season, alongside 28-year-old Ricardo Rodriguez, a circulator of the ball shaped by Oviedo, Burgos and Racing Santander. Sevilla answer with Inter-produced Lucien Agoume, 24, a strong ball-winner and passer, next to the 185cm Youssouf Fofana.
- Angelino gives the hosts a genuine edge on the flank. The 29-year-old left back is a Deportivo academy graduate who returned on loan from Roma with an option to buy after spells at Manchester City and RB Leipzig, and his overlapping runs and left-footed crosses are his calling card. On the other side, the 170cm Adria Artimira, 25, valued far more for his attacking output than his defending, must handle Portuguese left winger Felix Correia, 25, a Sporting product who has passed through Manchester City, Juventus and Lille.
- The centre-back matchup carries real weight. Deportivo have Jose Maria Gimenez, 31, the Uruguay captain and Atletico Madrid one-club legend whose aerial strength and ferocious tackling defined more than a decade in Madrid. Sevilla counter with two 188cm defenders: left-footed academy graduate Kike Salas, 24, comfortable building from the back, and Andres Castrin, 23, a Galician who turned professional at CD Lugo.
- Two very different goalkeepers take the gloves. Leonardo Roman, the 26-year-old 189cm signing who cost around nine million euros from Mallorca, is Deportivo's marquee summer arrival and protects their goal in a first top-flight campaign for eight years. Sevilla trust 32-year-old Greece international Odysseas Vlachodimos, 188cm, whose CV runs through Stuttgart, Benfica, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest and who is comfortable playing out from the back.
- Both benches can change the picture. Deportivo hold back Adama Traore, the 30-year-old winger who made over 100 Premier League appearances at Wolves, plus Marc Casado, 23, a former La Masia captain who screens the defence. Sevilla can call on Nigeria international Chidera Ejuke, 28, whose pace caught the eye in the Champions League with CSKA Moscow, and academy-raised left-footed striker Isaac Romero, 26.
