Match Preview
- Fifth-placed Real Betis (12 points from five games, 4W-0D-1L) welcome 15th-placed Getafe (5 points, 1W-2D-2L) to Seville. Betis are chasing leaders Barcelona, who have 18 points from six, and their goal difference of just +1 understates how ruthless they have been in tight games. Getafe, by contrast, have scored only three times in five matches.
- Betis' season has been a study in extremes: 1-0 away at Valencia on matchday 1, 1-0 at home to Real Sociedad on matchday 2, 1-0 at home to Real Madrid on matchday 4 and 2-1 away at Villarreal on matchday 5. Both home wins came without conceding. The one blemish is a 2-5 defeat at Levante on matchday 3, which accounts for five of the six goals they have shipped all season.
- Getafe arrive on the back of two straight 1-1 home draws, against Celta Vigo on matchday 4 and Deportivo La Coruna on matchday 5. Their only win was 1-0 at home to Racing Santander on matchday 2, and all three of their goals this season have come at home: they lost 0-3 at Alaves and 0-1 at Osasuna on the road without scoring.
- Betis line up with a glittering attacking band. Isco, 34 and a four-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid, operates in the number 10 role, with left-footed Brazil international Antony (26), who once moved from Ajax to Manchester United for 95 million euros, on the right and Barcelona-raised Morocco winger Abde Ezzalzouli (24) on the left. Both wingers cut inside, and Isco's job is to time their runs.
- Leading the line is Troy Parrott (24, 185cm), the Republic of Ireland striker who came through the Tottenham academy and broke out with 17 goals at Excelsior before a spell at AZ Alkmaar. He offers both hold-up play and runs in behind, and will be policed by Zackaria Romero, the 193cm left-footed centre-back on loan from Club Brugge, and 34-year-old captain Djene Dakonam of Togo.
- Tactically this is Betis' 4-2-3-1 against Getafe's 4-1-4-1, and the space around Getafe's single pivot will decide plenty. Nemanja Gudelj (34, Serbia, 187cm) anchors the midfield and can drop into central defence when needed. Betis pair the 189cm Uruguayan Facundo Bernal (23), signed via Fluminense, with left-footed Noel Deossa (26, 185cm), who made his name at Pachuca and Monterrey.
- Getafe's midfield four features Belgium international Orel Mangala (28, defensive midfielder), a Borussia Dortmund academy graduate whose career has taken in Stuttgart and Nottingham Forest, plus Mario Martin (22), a Real Madrid Castilla product who arrived after a loan at Real Valladolid. Ahead of them, Uruguayan Martin Satriano (23, 190cm, raised at Inter) supports Ivan Azon (23), a centre-forward from the Real Zaragoza academy.
- There is a reunion on the Betis bench: Chimy Hernandez (27, 175cm) spent time at Getafe earlier in his career before moves to Mallorca, Watford and Columbus Crew brought him back to Spain. Quick and technical, he is the obvious option if Betis need to unpick a compact Getafe defence late on.
- Betis also hold the edge in reserves, with Dani Ceballos (30, formerly of Real Madrid), Argentina playmaker Giovani Lo Celso (30), whose left foot supplies the through balls, long-serving Arsenal right-back Hector Bellerin (31) and former Bayern Munich midfielder Marc Roca (29). Getafe counter with Colombia's 34-year-old Johan Mojica and the 192cm Georgia centre-back Saba Sazonov.
- The goalkeeping matchup is worth watching too. Alvaro Valles (29, 190cm) is a modern keeper whose distribution makes him a first phase of Betis' build-up since arriving from Las Palmas. Getafe's David Soria (33, 192cm) won the Europa League during his Sevilla days and has helped restrict his side to six goals conceded in five; if Getafe sit deep, he will be busy.
