Match Preview
- Two clubs locked on seven points meet at El Sadar: Osasuna sit 13th, Rayo Vallecano 11th, and both have identical 2-1-3 records from six matches. Only goal difference separates them — minus seven for the hosts, minus five for the visitors. Barcelona's 18 points at the summit already look a world away, so this is about establishing distance from the drop zone rather than chasing anything.
- Osasuna began well, winning 2-1 at Celta Vigo on matchday one and edging Getafe 1-0 at home on matchday three, but they arrive on a three-game losing run. A 5-2 defeat at Alaves, a 0-2 home loss to Espanyol and a 4-0 hiding at Atletico Madrid have produced 11 goals conceded and just two scored in that stretch. Five goals in six league games is the lowest kind of return a team can carry into a must-win home fixture.
- Rayo's season has split cleanly along home and away lines. At Vallecas they saw off Racing Santander 3-2 and Espanyol 2-1; on the road they were beaten 5-2 by Barcelona and 4-1 by Real Madrid. Ten scored and 15 conceded tells the story of a side that will trade chances but rarely shuts a game down, which makes this trip to a low-scoring opponent an intriguing stylistic test.
- The reunion angle belongs to Catena. The 194cm centre-back, now 31, spent part of his career at Rayo Vallecano and helped them climb into the top flight before joining Osasuna. He anchors the middle of the home back three today and is the club's most dangerous aerial presence at set pieces — in both boxes, against the club he once served.
- Tactically it is Osasuna's 5-4-1 against Rayo's 4-3-3. The back five is designed to choke the width that Rayo live on, and Rayo's answer comes through Alvaro Garcia, the 167cm left winger who holds the club's LaLiga appearance record, and Jorge de Frutos, the 29-year-old Real Madrid Castilla graduate on the right. Osasuna's flank cover includes 21-year-old academy full-back Inigo Arguibide, who faces a serious examination.
- Midfield is four against three. Osasuna pair homegrown holder Iker Munoz, 23, with the 189cm Moncayola, while captain Kike Barja — a one-club man since the age of eight — and left-footed veteran Ruben Garcia, 33 and past 300 LaLiga appearances, work the outside lanes. Rayo counter with skipper Oscar Valentin, Senegal's 186cm Africa Cup of Nations winner Pathe Ciss, and the 170cm Athletic Bilbao product Unai Lopez.
- Ante Budimir against Florian Lejeune is the duel to watch. Budimir, 35 and 190cm, is Croatia's experienced target man whose heading and hold-up play give Osasuna their route forward; Lejeune, also 35, is a 189cm reader of the game with Newcastle United and Manchester City on his CV. With Osasuna scoring so rarely, winning those first contacts is close to their whole attacking plan.
- There is a striking Levante thread running through both squads. Osasuna start Aitor Fernandez, 35, who was Levante's long-serving number one, with the 192cm Sergio Herrera on the bench. Ruben Garcia also came through at Levante, and Rayo's De Frutos scored 13 goals in 112 appearances there across three seasons before returning to Vallecas.
- Both benches carry genuine game-changers. Osasuna can call on the 192cm Raul Garcia, a Copa del Rey winner with Real Betis, plus Raul Moro of Lazio and Ajax fame and the Lyon-schooled winger Del Castillo. Rayo hold back the 191cm Albania international Marash Kumbulla, formerly of Roma, Brazilian striker Alemao, who has played in Japan with Kyoto Sanga, and Georgia's Giorgi Tsitaishvili.
