Match Preview
- This is a meeting of two sides caught in the same traffic jam. Six clubs sit on eight points: Villarreal (9th), Athletic Club (10th, +1 goal difference), Espanyol (11th), Getafe (12th), Rayo Vallecano (13th, -5) and Osasuna (14th), with goal difference alone deciding the order. Athletic also hold a game in hand, having played six to Rayo's seven, while leaders Barcelona are already 13 points clear on 21.
- The underlying numbers could hardly be more different. Rayo have shipped 16 goals in seven matches, including a 5-2 defeat at Barcelona and a 4-1 loss at Real Madrid, yet have scored 11. Athletic have conceded only six in six but managed just seven at the other end, drawing their last two at home 1-1 with Elche and 0-0 with sixth-placed Alavés. Whether this becomes a shoot-out or a war of attrition is the first question.
- Unai López returns to face the club that made him. The 30-year-old came through Athletic's academy before spells at Leganés and Real Sociedad took him to Vallecas, where his close control in tight areas and quick passing set Rayo's tempo from central midfield. How much freedom Athletic's double pivot of Ruiz de Galarreta and Gerenabarrena allow him will shape the middle third.
- Rayo's front three in the 4-3-3 is full of character. Álvaro García, 33 and just 167cm, is the club's record La Liga appearance maker and still cuts inside off the left on his favoured foot. Sergio Camello, 25 and wearing the number 10, learned his running in behind in Atlético Madrid's academy, while Jorge de Frutos on the right is a Real Madrid Castilla graduate who scored 13 goals in 112 games at Levante.
- The full-back duels should be lively. Yuri Berchiche, now 36 and a Ligue 1 treble winner with Paris Saint-Germain, still supplies the width and crossing from the left, but every overlap leaves space for De Frutos to attack. On the other flank Jesús Areso, 27, arrived in the summer of 2025 for a 12 million euro release clause after 86 La Liga appearances with Osasuna, and he must handle Álvaro García's dribbling.
- Athletic's 4-2-3-1 is led by captain Iñaki Williams, 32, the iron man behind the club's remarkable consecutive La Liga appearance run and a Ghana international whose pace, physique and pressing set the tone. Behind him sits Robert Navarro, 24, schooled at Barcelona, Monaco and Real Sociedad, alongside the Torino-tested Álex Berenguer, 31, and 21-year-old Peio Canales, born in 2005 and back from a productive loan at Racing Santander.
- The holding roles offer a neat contrast. Rayo screen their back four with Senegal international Pathé Ciss, 32 and 186cm, an Africa Cup of Nations winner whose range of covering lets Pedro Díaz, 28 and a former Bordeaux player, and Unai López push forward. Athletic pair 33-year-old metronome Ruiz de Galarreta with 23-year-old Gerenabarrena, back from a loan at Castellón, a decade apart in age and 173cm against Ciss's frame.
- The goalkeeping comparison is worth a look. Unai Simón, 29 and 190cm, remains Spain's first choice, a shot-stopper who proved his nerve in the Euro 2020 shoot-out and is comfortable enough with his feet to start build-up play. Rayo field the equally tall Audero, a 29-year-old Italian, with Levante-schooled Dani Cárdenas, also 29, among the substitutes.
- Experience anchors Rayo's defence. Florian Lejeune, 35, a 189cm Frenchman with Manchester City and Newcastle United on his CV, partners 26-year-old Mujaid Sadick in the middle, with 34-year-old Albania international Ivan Balliu at right-back. Should the game need changing, 191cm former Roma centre-back Marash Kumbulla, 26, and long-serving ex-Lazio defender Luiz Felipe, 29, wait on the bench.
- Both benches carry genuine weapons. Athletic can call on Gorka Guruzeta, 30 and 188cm, a Copa del Rey winner, 192cm Morocco international Maroan Sannadi, 25, and left-footed winger Nico Serrano, 23, who has scored in the Champions League against Atalanta. Rayo answer with Brazilian striker Alemão, 28, a former Kyoto Sanga and Real Oviedo forward, and captain Óscar Valentín, 32, who climbed from the lower divisions.
