Match Preview
- Barcelona arrive unbeaten and perfect: eight wins from eight, 24 points, 34 goals scored and only seven conceded for a goal difference of plus-27. Real Betis sit third on 19 points from six wins, a draw and a single defeat, five behind the leaders, with Atletico Madrid second on 22 from nine games and Real Madrid fourth on 18. A result at the Benito Villamarin would reshape the title picture.
- Betis come in on a run of four wins and a draw from five. They beat Real Madrid 1-0 at home in round four, edged Villarreal 2-1 away in round five and saw off Getafe 1-0 in round six, before drawing 1-1 at Deportivo La Coruna and then thrashing Osasuna 5-2 at home in round eight. That last result alone accounts for five of their 14 league goals.
- Barcelona's attacking numbers are simply different: 34 goals in eight matches. They won 5-0 at Valencia in round four, 4-2 at Levante in round five, 7-2 at home to Racing Santander in round six, 3-1 at Sevilla in round seven and 3-0 against Getafe in round eight. A Betis defence that has shipped nine goals in eight games faces its sternest examination of the season.
- Betis field three men with Barcelona in their past. Left winger Abde Ezzalzouli, the 24-year-old Morocco international, came through La Masia before a spell at Osasuna; right-back Hector Bellerin, now 31, also graduated from Barcelona's academy before making his name at Arsenal. On the bench sits 35-year-old Marc Bartra, another La Masia product who later played for Borussia Dortmund.
- The double pivots will decide the rhythm. Betis pair Dani Ceballos, the 30-year-old who returned to the club after spells at Real Madrid and two loans at Arsenal, with 23-year-old Uruguayan Facundo Bernal, a 189cm ball-winner signed from Fluminense. Barcelona counter with Pedri, the 23-year-old widely regarded as Iniesta's heir, and 191cm Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner formerly of Atletico Madrid and Villarreal.
- Experience fills the Betis attacking band. Giovani Lo Celso, the 30-year-old Argentina international who has played for Paris Saint-Germain, Tottenham and Villarreal, operates centrally with his left-footed through balls, while Pablo Fornals, also 30, brings the know-how of spells at West Ham and Villarreal. Leading the line is 175cm Chimy Hernandez, 27, a pacy forward who became a star with Columbus Crew in MLS after stints at Watford, Getafe and Mallorca.
- Barcelona's front line is as dangerous as any in Europe. Lamine Yamal, still only 19, is the left-footed inverted winger who debuted for the first team at 15 and set a new youngest-appearance record at EURO 2024. Fermin Lopez, 23, was top scorer at the Paris Olympics, and Karim Adeyemi, the 24-year-old Germany forward, arrived via Red Bull Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund. Gabriel Jesus, 29, formerly of Manchester City and Palmeiras, leads the line.
- Both goalkeepers are modern, ball-playing types. Barcelona's Joan Garcia, 25 and 193cm, recorded the most saves in the division during his Espanyol days and won gold at the Paris Olympics. Betis counter with Alvaro Valles, 29 and 190cm, who built his reputation at Las Palmas and whose accurate distribution turns him into the first stage of the build-up as well as a reliable close-range shot-stopper.
- Barcelona's back four mixes precocity with pedigree. Pau Cubarsi, 19, reads danger with remarkable composure, flanked by the 186cm left-footed Gerard Martin, 24, La Masia full-back Xavier Espart, and Jules Kounde, the 27-year-old France defender who won the Europa League with Sevilla. Alejandro Balde, 22, and the much-travelled Joao Cancelo, 32, wait on the bench.
- Both benches carry serious weight. Betis can call on 34-year-old Isco, a four-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid, Brazilian winger Antony, 26, who played for Manchester United and Ajax, and Republic of Ireland striker Troy Parrott, 24, who scored 17 goals during his spell at Excelsior. Barcelona hold back Frenkie de Jong, EURO 2024 top scorer Dani Olmo and captain Raphinha.
