- A Ligue 1 opening-weekend meeting at the Velodrome that pits two very different squad-building philosophies against each other. Marseille line up 4-3-3 around a core of vast experience: 33-year-old Geoffrey Kondogbia, 32-year-old Emerson Palmieri and 31-year-old Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Strasbourg answer with a 4-2-3-1 containing five 20-year-old starters in Jessim Yassine, Samuel Amo-Ameyaw, Samir El Mourabet, Diogo Loban and Lucas Hogsberg.
- Marseille's front three reads Igor Paixao on the left, Amine Gouiri through the middle and Amine Harit on the right. Paixao arrived from Feyenoord for a club-record fee after being voted Dutch Player of the Year in 2025, and the 168cm right-footer's pace and cut-in shooting from the left flank remain his calling cards. Gouiri, the 26-year-old Algeria international, came up through Lyon's academy before earning moves to Nice and Rennes, and is expected to lead the line as the club's designated goalscorer.
- Midfield control looks decisive. Marseille field the 185cm Denmark international Hojbjerg as their anchor, with Angel Gomes - a 168cm technician who came through Manchester United's academy before flourishing at Lille - and Algeria's Imad Abdelli, a Le Havre academy graduate who broke through at Angers, ahead of him. Strasbourg counter with a young double pivot: the locally born academy product El Mourabet and 20-year-old Diogo Loban, signed from Guimaraes.
- Kondogbia, a defensive midfielder by trade, sits at the base of Marseille's defence. The Central African Republic captain is nicknamed 'the Octopus' for the ball-winning reach of his 188cm frame, and the 33-year-old has a Copa del Rey with Valencia and a LaLiga title with Atletico Madrid on his CV. Beside him is 23-year-old CJ Egan-Riley, a Manchester City academy graduate who made his name at Burnley and was named in the Championship team of the season in 2024-25. How lone striker Sekou Mara pulls that pairing apart is a key question.
- One of the sharpest individual duels is Strasbourg's No.11 Sebastian Nanasi against Marseille right-back Timothy Weah. Nanasi, a Sweden international signed for around 11 million euros after starring for Malmo FF, is a right-footed left winger who thrives on dribbling and cutting inside to shoot. Weah, son of Ballon d'Or winner George Weah, is a winger by trade who was converted to right-back at Juventus and already knows Ligue 1 from spells at Paris Saint-Germain and Lille.
- Strasbourg's attacking band features two left-footed dribblers. Yassine, 20, helped Morocco win the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup and collected multiple man-of-the-match awards there before joining for roughly 7 million euros from Dunkerque. Amo-Ameyaw, also 20, moved from Tottenham's academy to Southampton and became the Premier League's youngest debutant at 16. Containing them falls largely to Italy international Emerson Palmieri at left-back, a veteran of Chelsea and Roma.
- At the heart of Strasbourg's back line is Andrew Omobamidele, the 188cm Republic of Ireland centre-back who made his Premier League debut with Norwich City and added top-flight experience at Nottingham Forest. The 24-year-old combines aerial strength with progressive passing. To his right is the 187cm Guela Doue, a Rennes academy product who represented Ivory Coast at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and can also play centre-back - useful against Paixao's inward runs.
- The benches carry weight too. Marseille can call on 30-year-old Neal Maupay, a centre-forward with Premier League mileage at Brighton and Everton whose work rate, penalty-box instincts and willingness to needle defenders make him a useful change. Alongside him wait Nayef Aguerd, the Morocco centre-back who reached the 2022 World Cup semi-finals, and 23-year-old Tochukwu Nnadi, who debuted for Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Strasbourg have Senegal midfielder Pape Demba Diop, back after a spell at Toulouse, and Mathis Amougou, a U17 World Cup Bronze Ball winner.
