- Le Mans begin their Ligue 1 campaign at home, and the shape contrast is immediate: a 3-4-3 for the hosts against Brest's 4-2-3-1. The visitors line up with Mboup, Doumbia and Del Castillo behind a lone striker, so the question is whether Le Mans' flat midfield four can pick them up without pulling the back three apart. From the opening weekend already played, Marseille sit top on three points with a +4 goal difference.
- Billal Brahimi starts on the Le Mans bench against a former club. The 26-year-old Algerian forward, 183cm and well travelled, has Stade Brestois 29 on a CV that also takes in Nice, Angers, Sint-Truiden, Santos in Brazil and Estrela in Portugal. If the hosts need a different kind of runner in the final half hour, he is the obvious card to play.
- Brest lead the line with Ludovic Ajorque, a 197cm target man of 32 who scored 50 goals and won the League Cup at Strasbourg before a Bundesliga spell with Mainz. Le Mans answer with a back three that includes the 176cm Yasser Larouci and 20-year-old Noa Boisse, so the aerial mismatch is the first problem the hosts must solve.
- The Brest double pivot pairs Lucas Tousart with 21-year-old Belgian Joseph Nonge. Tousart, 29, brings 127 Bundesliga appearances from spells at Hertha Berlin and Union Berlin after coming through at Lyon, and his physical ball-winning sets the tone. Alongside that, Joris Chotard, a defensive midfielder by trade with 177 Ligue 1 games for Montpellier, has been placed in the centre of the back four to help build from deep.
- There is a strong Lyon thread through the Brest attack. Left winger Pathe Mboup, 22, came from Dakar Sacre-Coeur via Standard Liege and Lyon before arriving in Brittany, while right-sided Romain Del Castillo is a Lyon academy graduate who signed in 2021 and cuts in on his favoured left foot. Mama Samba Balde, also a former Lyon player, waits on the bench.
- Kamory Doumbia takes the number 10 role for Brest. Just 170cm, the Mali international is a technician with 29 caps and 14 international goals, and he moved permanently from Reims in 2024. Whether the 23-year-old can find space between the Le Mans midfield four and the back three will largely dictate how quickly the visitors can play forward.
- Brest's defence mixes 19 and 34. Raphael Le Guen, a 196cm centre-back who joined the academy at 13 and made his professional debut in August 2025, lines up alongside right-back Kenny Lala, a veteran who won the League Cup at Strasbourg and back-to-back Greek titles with Olympiacos. How that blend of youth and mileage holds up on opening night is worth watching.
- Both goalkeepers stand 193cm. Egil Selvik is a left-footed Norway international with seven caps who moved through Udinese before establishing himself at Watford, and he is valued for his composure in possession. Nicolas Kocik, 28, arrived at Le Mans after spells at Cholet and Valenciennes. In a first-round fixture likely to feature plenty of set pieces, the calmer pair of hands may decide it.
- Le Mans' front three leans on experience. Louis Mafouta, 32 and 181cm, has played for Metz, Amiens and Guingamp as well as Panserraikos in Greece and Neuchatel Xamax in Switzerland, while 30-year-old Antoine Rabillard is a 175cm runner with Concarneau and Go Ahead Eagles behind him. With Senegalese forward Dame Gueye completing the line, the hosts will look to stretch the Brest back four wide.
- In midfield Le Mans pair 29-year-old Alexandre Lauray, a Bordeaux product, with 22-year-old Rayan Bamba, who came through Rennes before spells at Concarneau and Nancy. Lucas Buades, hardened at Rodez and Nimes, and Bourabaa, formerly of Troyes, provide the width. If Larouci, once on the books at Liverpool and Sheffield United, can push forward from the left, Le Mans can outnumber the Brest pivot.
