Match Preview
- Toulouse's 3-4-2-1 meets Lyon's 4-2-3-1 to open the Ligue 1 season. The hosts push wing-backs high outside a back three, Lyon field three attackers ahead of a double pivot, and if both sets of wide players commit forward the flanks will be where the game is decided. From the fixtures already completed on the opening weekend, Marseille top the table on three points with a +4 goal difference, with Lens on +3.
- Lyon's starting eleven is strikingly young. Remi Himbert is 18, Kail Boudache, Noah Nartey and Julien Duranville are all 20, and behind them sit 21-year-old Mathys de Carvalho and 25-year-old Mads Bidstrup. The contrast with the bench is stark: captain Corentin Tolisso, a 2018 World Cup winner, and Nicolas Tagliafico, who lifted the trophy with Argentina in 2022, both start among the substitutes.
- Noah Nartey takes the number 10 role at 20 years old. The Denmark youth attacker with Ghanaian roots was twice named the Superliga's young player of the month at Brondby and was voted the league's player of the year, then scored on his Ligue 1 debut. How closely he links with Boudache and Duranville either side of him will set the tempo of Lyon's transitions.
- The two Lyon wide men have travelled very different roads. Boudache, 20, is a left-footed right winger who came through the Ales youth system into Nice and made his professional debut in the Europa League in January 2026. Duranville, also 20 and just 170cm, arrived in France after spells at Anderlecht, Borussia Dortmund and Basel. Ahead of them, 18-year-old Himbert, born in 2008, has already played at a FIFA U-17 World Cup.
- Lyon's pivot pairs academy graduate Mathys de Carvalho, a 21-year-old Portugal youth international who specialises in recovering the ball and keeping it simple, with Mads Bidstrup, a 25-year-old Dane whose CV includes Brentford, RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg. Tyler Morton, a Liverpool academy product, and USA international Tanner Tessmann are held in reserve, so the visitors can change the midfield without losing control.
- Toulouse's back three balances height and experience. Rasmus Nicolaisen, a 191cm left-footed Dane who came through Midtjylland and joined in 2021, is the anchor, with USA international Mark McKenzie, signed in 2024 after Philadelphia Union and Genk, on the other side. Between them stands 20-year-old Ivorian Christ Tape, for whom an opening night against Lyon is a serious examination.
- The goalkeeping contrast is 21 against 30. Guillaume Restes has been at Toulouse since the age of six, a 188cm left-footer with sharp reflexes, strong distribution and unusual authority for his years. Remy Descamps, 194cm and comfortable with both feet, came through the PSG academy and built a reputation at Nantes as a cup specialist, helping them to a Coupe de France final and earning a name for penalty shootout saves.
- Toulouse field two Argentines in the front line. Santiago Hidalgo, 21, is a 174cm left-footed centre forward who passed through San Lorenzo before developing at Independiente and moving to France in 2025. Julian Vignolo, 19, arrived in the summer of 2025 after scoring five goals with three assists in 24 games for Racing de Cordoba in Argentina's second tier. Tagliafico gives Lyon an Argentine presence of their own on the bench.
- Yann Gboho occupies the left of Toulouse's front three. The 25-year-old, born in Ivory Coast, came through the Rennes academy and reached Toulouse in 2024 via Vitesse and Cercle Brugge, and although right-footed he does his best work off the left with technique and pace. He will be met by 33-year-old Clinton Mata, a three-time Belgian champion with Club Brugge, and 21-year-old Zachary Athekame.
- Lyon's bench could shape the closing stages. Lois Openda, 26, has played for RB Leipzig and Juventus; Malick Fofana, 21, cost 17 million euros from Gent; Ernest Nuamah, a 22-year-old Ghana international, was voted the best player in the Danish Superliga at Nordsjaelland; and Czech playmaker Pavel Sulc scored 47 goals in 167 games for Viktoria Plzen. Toulouse will need their legs to hold up late.
