Match Preview
- This is the final fixture of Ligue 1's opening matchday. Across the eight games already completed, Marseille sit top on goal difference (+4), with Lens, Lille, Lyon and Monaco all level on three points. Both Rennes and PSG start their campaign here, so a win would drop either side straight into that leading group. Both managers have gone with a 4-3-3, setting up a head-on contest at Roazhon Park.
- Ousmane Dembele returns to a ground he knows intimately: Roazhon Park was home during his time at Stade Rennais before moves to Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona. Now 29 and redeployed as a central striker at PSG, he was the driving force behind the 2024-25 treble and won the Ballon d'Or. Two-footed and able to shoot with equal precision off either side, he is the problem Rennes must solve first.
- Desire Doue makes it a double homecoming on the PSG front line. The 21-year-old came through the Rennes academy before PSG beat Bayern Munich to his signature, and he already holds the record as the youngest French scorer in European club competition, set at 17. Starting on the right wing, his dribbling and instinct in front of goal will be aimed straight at the club that developed him.
- The three-versus-three midfield battle should decide the tempo. Rennes anchor with 31-year-old Valentin Rongier, a former captain of both Nantes and Marseille, flanked by 32-year-old Adrien Thomasson and Poland's left-footed No.10 Sebastian Szymanski, an Eredivisie winner with Feyenoord who produced 22 goals and 30 assists at Fenerbahce. PSG counter with Vitinha, the Porto-schooled heartbeat of the side, alongside ex-Benfica midfielder Joao Neves (21) and Warren Zaire-Emery (20), who debuted for the first team at 16.
- Rennes field a varied front three. Esteban Lepaul, 26, is a centre-forward who climbed from the lower divisions via Epinal, Orleans and Angers; on the right is Jordan international Mousa Al-Tamari, 29, the left-footed winger who helped his country reach the 2023 Asian Cup final. Issa Soumare, a Senegalese left winger who came through Le Havre, brings cut-ins and pace. They face 188cm left-footed Ecuadorian centre-back Willian Pacho and captain Marquinhos, a PSG mainstay for over a decade.
- PSG's right flank belongs to Achraf Hakimi, the 27-year-old Real Madrid graduate who also served Dortmund and Inter before becoming a fixture in Paris. Opposite him stands 21-year-old Mamadou Nagida, born in Douala, Cameroon, who joined Rennes from Academie des Brasseries in 2023 and made his Europa League debut within three months. Both full-backs live off their sprinting, making this the fastest duel on the pitch.
- Rennes pair two young centre-backs: 24-year-old Charlie Cresswell, the Leeds United academy product who arrived via Millwall and Toulouse, and 20-year-old Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal, a 190cm graduate of Morocco's Mohammed VI Academy who scored in a U17 AFCON final. Aerially they are well equipped, but coping with Dembele's unpredictable changes of rhythm and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's ability to break a game open one-on-one is another matter.
- The goalkeeping contrast is worth watching. Rennes have Brice Samba, 32, a left-footed keeper who was first choice at Nottingham Forest and Lens and was named Ligue 1's best goalkeeper in 2022-23. PSG start 192cm Russia international Matvey Safonov, a noted penalty stopper from Krasnodar, leaving Lucas Chevalier on the bench - the 24-year-old signed from Lille in summer 2025 as Donnarumma's successor. How that pecking order develops is a subplot of the season.
- PSG's bench is stacked. Fabian Ruiz, a Team of the Tournament pick as Spain won EURO 2024, sits alongside Ferran Torres, the Valencia youth product who has since played for Manchester City and Barcelona. Belgian winger Mika Godts, 21, arrives on the back of 12 goals and nine assists in 21 games for Ajax in 2025-26, while 18-year-old Dro Fernandez, signed from Barcelona's La Masia in January 2026, is another option Luis Enrique can turn to.
- Rennes have game-changers in reserve too. Ludovic Blas, 28, is the left-footed attacker who scored the winner in Nantes' 2022 Coupe de France final; Quentin Merlin is a left-back who also came through Nantes before a spell at Marseille; Eliezer Mayenda, 21, has already scored in the Premier League with Sunderland. Add Arnaud Nordin, the technical right winger on loan from Mainz, and Rennes are not short of ways to change the game late on.
