Match Preview
- The opening weekend split these two sides in opposite directions. Strasbourg were beaten 4-0 away at Marseille and sit 18th and last with zero points and a -4 goal difference, while Lens hammered Auxerre 5-2 at home to bank three points and climb to third. With leaders Lille on just four points from two games, the table is still tightly packed, and a second straight defeat at home would leave Strasbourg cut adrift early.
- Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser returns to the club that raised him. The 21-year-old came through the Strasbourg academy before spells at Red Star and Dijon FCO, and his 192cm frame makes him strong on crosses and quick off his line. Now a France U21 international viewed as Lens' long-term number one, he faces his old club's supporters from the other end of the pitch.
- The shape battle pits Strasbourg's 4-2-3-1 against Lens' 3-4-2-1, and the wide areas will decide who controls territory. Lens use 30-year-old Matthieu Udol, a Metz academy product known for his positioning and defensive reliability, on the left, and Poland international Michal Skoras, a 172cm dribbler schooled at Lech Poznan and later Club Brugge and Gent, on the right. How high those wing-backs can push will dictate how much defensive work Strasbourg's wingers must do.
- Florian Thauvin anchors one of the two positions behind the striker for Lens. The 33-year-old was part of France's 2018 World Cup-winning squad and scored 86 goals in 281 appearances for Marseille, cutting in from the right onto his stronger left foot. Alongside him is 22-year-old Croatian forward Franjo Ivanovic (185cm), with Senegal international Abdallah Sima leading the line after arriving permanently on the back of seven goals at Brest.
- Strasbourg's attacking band is young and thoroughly international. Giovanni Reyna, 23, operates as the number 10 after coming through Borussia Dortmund's academy and racking up 36 caps and nine goals for the United States. On the right is 20-year-old Jessim Yassine, a left-footed Morocco U20 international who helped win the 2025 U-20 World Cup and joined from Dunkerque for around 7 million euros, while Sebastian Nanasi, a Sweden international signed from Malmo FF for roughly 11 million, works the left.
- In midfield Strasbourg pair Pape Demba Diop, the 22-year-old Senegalese who has returned from a loan spell at Toulouse, with 20-year-old Diogo Roban, a product of the Guimaraes academy. Diop was top scorer at the 2023 U20 Africa Cup of Nations and brings physicality and drive in transition. They face Micka Cuisance, a Bayern Munich academy graduate who made 30 appearances on loan at Marseille, and 170cm Algeria international Yassine Titraoui, in a duel that should set the tempo of the match.
- How Strasbourg reorganise after conceding four in the opener is a genuine question. Their centre-back pairing features 20-year-old Denmark international Lucas Hogsberg, who spent his entire youth career at Nordsjaelland before a move worth around 15 million euros, and 188cm Republic of Ireland defender Andrew Omobamidele, who has Premier League experience with Norwich City and Nottingham Forest. Behind them stands 192cm goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, a Villarreal graduate who later joined Chelsea.
- Lens field a back three that blends experience with homegrown talent. Polish centre-back Mike Nawrocki, raised at Legia Warsaw and later at Celtic, recorded three goals and three assists in 17 Bundesliga 2 games on loan at Hannover. He is flanked by two 21-year-old academy graduates: Burkina Faso international Ismaelo Ganiou, who stands 191cm and spent a developmental loan at Annecy, and 187cm Souleymane Sagnan, who gained his experience at Caen.
- Lens also carry weight on the bench. Florian Sotoca, 35, climbed through the French lower divisions and has been a symbol of the club since joining in 2019. Belgium international Thorgan Hazard first made his name here on loan and returned on a contract running to 2028, while Mali international Amadou Haidara arrives with seven seasons of RB Leipzig behind him. Add academy forward Rayan Fofana, a 20-year-old already with five Ligue 1 goals, and Lens have plenty of ways to change a game late.
- Strasbourg's own substitutes are packed with prospects. Samuel Amo-Ameyaw, 20, moved from Tottenham's academy to Southampton and became the club's youngest Premier League debutant at 16, operating as a left-footed winger. Mathis Amougou, also 20, won the Bronze Ball at the U17 World Cup and offers box-to-box running in central midfield. Bordeaux-raised striker Seko Mara, 24, scored in Ligue 1 during a loan at Auxerre and would be an obvious option if the hosts need to chase the game.
