Match Preview
- Both clubs opened the season with a win. Monaco edged Le Havre 1-0 away, while Marseille swept Strasbourg aside 4-0 at home for a goal difference of plus four. Marseille are sixth and Monaco eighth, and with leaders Paris FC on only four points after two games, a second victory here would push either side straight into the early title picture.
- Geoffrey Kondogbia faces one of his old clubs. The 33-year-old, captain of the Central African Republic, spent time at Monaco before spells at Inter, Valencia, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla, and his 188cm frame and long reach earned him the nickname 'the octopus'. Nominally an anchor man, he lines up in central defence tonight.
- With both sides in a 4-2-3-1, the double pivots will set the tone. Monaco pair 191cm Switzerland international Denis Zakaria, a veteran of Borussia Monchengladbach, Juventus and Chelsea, with 22-year-old Senegal international Lamine Camara, signed from Metz. Marseille answer with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, once Southampton's captain and a 184-game Tottenham midfielder, alongside Himad Abdelli, who made his name at Angers.
- The playmaking duel is intriguing. Aleksandr Golovin joined Monaco from CSKA Moscow for a club-record fee in 2018 and extended his deal to 2029, using his right foot to pick locks and deliver set pieces. Angel Gomes, at 168cm, is the smallest man on the pitch but came through Manchester United's academy and grew into a genuine creator at Lille.
- Monaco's attack is strikingly young. Leading the line is 20-year-old German striker Paris Brunner, a Borussia Dortmund academy product who gained match time on loan at Cercle Brugge. Behind him are 21-year-old Stanis Idumbo, schooled at Gent and Ajax before scoring his first Sevilla goal against Barcelona, and 22-year-old academy graduate Mamadou Coulibaly, a France Under-20 international.
- Marseille build around 26-year-old Algeria international Amine Gouiri, who came through Lyon before stepping up via Nice and Rennes. Around him are Morocco's Amine Harit, a PSG academy product with Schalke experience, and Netherlands international Quinten Timber, signed from Feyenoord. The question is whether the front line that scored four on opening weekend travels as well.
- The full-back battles carry weight. Monaco use 25-year-old Brazil international Vanderson, signed from Gremio, on the right and 23-year-old Sporting CP graduate Flavio Nazinho on the left. Marseille counter with Emerson Palmieri, a EURO 2020 winner and the first player to win all four major UEFA competitions, at left-back, and Timothy Weah, the United States international and son of George Weah, on the right.
- The goalkeeping contrast is stark. Monaco's Lukas Hradecky, 36, holds the record for most Bundesliga appearances by a foreign goalkeeper with 323 games and 92 clean sheets, and captained Bayer Leverkusen through an unbeaten league title. Marseille's Jeffrey de Lange, 28, is a 191cm Ajax academy product who built his career at Twente and Go Ahead Eagles.
- Both benches offer real quality. Monaco can call on Denmark international Mika Biereth, an Arsenal academy graduate who once scored a hat-trick in eight minutes in Ligue 1, plus Germany international Thilo Kehrer, a Ligue 1 champion during his four seasons at PSG. Marseille have Morocco centre-back Nayef Aguerd, a semi-finalist at the 2022 World Cup, and Neal Maupay, a striker with Brighton and Everton on his CV.
