Match Preview
- Two sides that opened the campaign with identical 2-2 draws meet here. Rennes sit 13th and Le Mans 12th, both on one point from one match with a goal difference of zero. Rennes shared six goals at home with Paris Saint-Germain, while Le Mans did the same against Brest on their own patch. With Paris FC already top on four points from two games, a first win of the season matters to both.
- The tactical question is Rennes' 4-3-3 against Le Mans' 3-1-4-2. The visitors screen their back three with Alexandre Laure, the 29-year-old Bordeaux academy product, and push Lucas Calodat, Brabar, Lucas Bourtel and Lucas Buades ahead of him in a bank of four. Rennes must find a way to control the middle with only Rongier, Thomasson and Szymanski.
- Esteban Lepaul leads the Rennes line at 26. A late developer who climbed through Epinal and Orleans in the lower divisions before making his name at Angers, the centre-forward combines a poacher's instinct with relentless pressing. How he attacks a Le Mans back three of Harold Voyer, Eyoum and 20-year-old Noah Boisset is the headline duel.
- Mousa Al-Tamari brings the individual spark on the right. Nicknamed the Jordanian Messi, the left-footed Jordan international became the first player from his country to appear in a top-five European league during his Montpellier days and helped Jordan finish runners-up at the 2023 Asian Cup. Cutting inside onto his stronger foot, he will test the space a three-man defence tends to concede wide.
- Rennes' midfield carries real pedigree. Sebastian Szymanski, 27, won an Eredivisie title with Feyenoord and produced 22 goals and 30 assists in two and a half seasons at Fenerbahce from the left-footed number ten role. Alongside him, Valentin Rongier captained both Nantes and Marseille before arriving, while 32-year-old Adrien Thomasson scored 28 goals in 156 matches for Strasbourg.
- For a Le Mans side back in Ligue 1 after a 16-year absence, the experience on the bench is priceless. Djibril Sidibe, 34, is a 2018 World Cup winner with France who broke through at Troyes before spells at Lille, Monaco, Everton, AEK Athens and Toulouse. Beside him sits Bilal Brahimi, 26, a Nice academy graduate with Ligue 1 minutes at Brest and Angers.
- Set pieces should be a genuine battleground. Rennes pair Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal, the 20-year-old, 190cm centre-back from Morocco's Mohammed VI Academy, with 187cm Leeds United product Charlie Cresswell. Le Mans answer with 193cm goalkeeper Nicolas Kocik, whose command of crosses was honed across the French lower divisions at Cholet and Valenciennes.
- Le Mans build their midfield around small, technical players: Lucas Bourtel stands 165cm and Lucas Calodat 171cm, both operating in tight spaces. The question is whether Rennes can raise the physical tempo after the break, with Mahdi Camara waiting on the bench. The 28-year-old box-to-box midfielder captained Saint-Etienne and played Champions League football at Brest.
- Rennes also hold the stronger attacking options in reserve. Ludovic Blas, 28, scored the winning goal in the 2022 Coupe de France final for Nantes; Eliezer Mayenda, 21, came through Sochaux and scored in the Premier League with Sunderland; and left-footed winger Arnaud Nordin, a Saint-Etienne academy graduate, adds change of pace off the flank.
- Le Mans field a veteran front two of Louis Mafouta, 32, and Dame Gueye, 31. Mafouta is a Central African Republic forward whose career has taken in Metz, Amiens, Guingamp and Neuchatel Xamax in Switzerland, while Senegal-born Gueye has played as far afield as Olympique Medea in Algeria. Between them they bring hard-earned mileage to the promoted side's attack.
