Match Preview
- Toulouse sit 16th on a single point from two matches, with one draw, one defeat and a minus-two goal difference, while Lille arrive third and unbeaten on four points from a win and a draw. Monaco have set the early pace on six points, and Lille are level on four with Paris FC and Lyon, so a win in the south-west would keep them right in touch at the top.
- The early evidence points in opposite directions. Toulouse were beaten 2-0 at home by Lyon on the opening weekend and then had to settle for a 2-2 draw away at Brest, conceding four goals in two outings. Lille won 2-0 at Angers before holding Paris Saint-Germain to a 2-2 draw at home, a performance that should give them plenty of belief here.
- Olivier Giroud leads the Lille line at 39. France's all-time leading scorer with 137 caps and a 2018 World Cup winner, the former Arsenal, Chelsea and AC Milan striker already broke Lille's record for the club's oldest goalscorer at 38. His 193cm frame, hold-up play and aerial threat will be tested by Toulouse's 191cm left-footed Danish centre-back Rasmus Nicolaisen (29) and USA international Mark McKenzie (27).
- Toulouse field a remarkably young side. Local 18-year-old Ilyas Aziz starts on the left wing, two-footed 18-year-old Alexis Vossah — who made his Ligue 1 debut at 17 — anchors midfield, and 21-year-old Guillaume Restes, at the club since the age of six, is in goal. Against a Lille side captained by 36-year-old Benjamin André and featuring 31-year-old Nabil Bentaleb, they will have to make energy count against experience.
- With both teams in a 4-2-3-1, the double pivots meet head on. Toulouse pair Vossah with Cristian Cásseres (26), the Venezuela international who spent six seasons at the New York Red Bulls and covers ground box to box. Lille counter with Bentaleb, a Lille-born, Tottenham-schooled left-footed holder, and André, who lifted the Coupe de France with Rennes in 2019. Whoever wins the second balls dictates the rhythm.
- Lille's attacking band offers real variety. Number 10 Hákon Arnar Haraldsson (23) is the Iceland playmaker who helped Copenhagen to three straight Danish titles before moving in 2023, while Morocco's Osame Sahraoui (25) is only 170cm but dangerous cutting in from the left. Ethan Mbappé, the 19-year-old left-footed midfielder from the PSG academy, adds close control between the lines against Toulouse's inexperienced full-backs.
- The visitors have conceded only twice so far. Alexsandro (27), the 189cm left-footed Brazilian who earned his first call-up under Carlo Ancelotti in 2025, partners Belgian Nathan Ngoy (23), a Standard Liège product, at centre-back. Calvin Verdonk (29), a Feyenoord graduate and the first Indonesia international to play in Ligue 1, is at left-back, with Portugal's Tiago Santos (24) opposite him and 190cm Turkey goalkeeper Berke Özer behind them.
- Japan striker Ayase Ueda (28) is among the Lille substitutes. The centre-forward moved from Kashima Antlers to Cercle Brugge and then Feyenoord, where he broke the record for the most Eredivisie goals by a Japanese player, and his game is built on penalty-box instincts and clever hold-up work. If he replaces the 39-year-old Giroud late on, he brings fresh legs to a phase of the game where Lille may be pushing hard.
- Toulouse's attack is led by Canada international Jayden Russell-Rowe (23, 183cm), signed from Columbus Crew in February 2026 after finishing as top scorer and MVP in MLS NEXT Pro, and he presses aggressively from the front. Behind him is left-footed Argentine forward Santiago Hidalgo (21), a former Independiente youth player, with academy graduate Rafik Messali (23) on the right. Whether that young front line can crack Lille's organised back four is the central question.
