Match Preview
- Paris FC travel to Marseille seventh in the table on four points from two games, with a goal difference of +3 and, notably, no goals conceded. Marseille sit 10th on three points and +2, also with a match in hand on most of the division. Monaco already lead on nine points from three, and it was Monaco who beat Marseille in round two.
- Marseille began with a 4-0 home rout of Strasbourg before losing 2-0 away at Monaco, giving them a W-L record. Paris FC drew 0-0 at Estac Troyes and then beat Nice 3-0 at home for D-W. That clean sheet record is the visitors' calling card so far, and it runs directly into a Marseille side that has already put four goals past an opponent this season.
- Maxime Lopez returns to the club that raised him. The 28-year-old came through Marseille's academy before spells at Sassuolo and Fiorentina in Serie A, and at 167cm he relies on close control and vision rather than physique. He is now the metronome of the Paris FC midfield, so how often he is allowed to receive the ball in front of Marseille's midfield will shape the tempo.
- The shapes could hardly be more different: Marseille in a 4-1-4-1, Paris FC in a 5-4-1. Everything for the hosts filters through a single pivot, 31-year-old Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, the Denmark international who came out of Bayern Munich's academy, captained Southampton and made 184 appearances for Tottenham. Covering the ground either side of him against a compact five-man defence is a significant ask.
- Marseille's band of four carries serious quality. Igor Paixao, 26 and just 168cm, was named the Netherlands' player of the year in 2025 after helping Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title and joined for a club-record fee; he is a right-footed winger who cuts in from the left. Inside him are Angel Gomes, 26, a Manchester United academy product who matured at Lille, Algeria's Himad Abdelli, 27, who established himself at Angers, and Morocco's Amine Harit, 29, formerly of Nantes and Schalke.
- The centre-forward duel pits two African internationals against each other. Amine Gouiri, 26, rose through Lyon's academy before moving up via Nice and Rennes, and although right-footed he is comfortable cutting in from the left as well as finishing centrally. Racine Sinayoko, 26 and 186cm, is a one-club product of Auxerre who leads the Mali line on physical strength and penalty-box instinct.
- Paris FC's back five mixes height with experience. Diego Coppola, 22 and 192cm, graduated from Hellas Verona and arrived on loan after an eleven-million-euro move to Brighton. Alongside him is Samir Chergui, 27, an Auxerre academy product with more than 100 appearances for Paris FC, while 34-year-old Mali captain Hamari Traore, a veteran of six seasons at Rennes and a spell at Real Sociedad, patrols the right. Adama Camara, 195cm, completes an unusually tall line.
- In goal, the contrast is stark. Paris FC have 36-year-old Kevin Trapp, four seasons a Paris Saint-Germain player and a Europa League winner with Eintracht Frankfurt. Marseille start Geoffrey de Lange, the 28-year-old, 191cm Dutchman who came through Ajax's youth system and played for Twente and Go Ahead Eagles, and who is regarded as a back-up rather than a first choice.
- There is a Burnley subplot down the right. CJ Egan-Riley, 23, left Manchester City for Burnley and was named in the Championship team of the season in 2024-25 before joining Marseille. Facing him is 21-year-old Luca Koleosho, a natural winger deployed in the Paris FC defensive line, who made his La Liga debut at Espanyol and went on to play Premier League football at Burnley.
- Marseille's full-backs offer another layer. Emerson Palmieri, the 32-year-old Italy international, won Euro 2020 and is the first player to lift all four major UEFA trophies, while Timothy Weah, 26, brings the pace he showed at Juventus, Lille and Paris Saint-Germain to the right. Paris FC's counter-attacking outlets are Ilan Kebbal, the 169cm left-footed playmaker who set up eleven goals in Ligue 2 during their promotion campaign, and two-footed 23-year-old Pablo Pagis.
