Match Preview
- Rennes are unbeaten after three rounds, with two wins and a draw for seven points and fifth place, two behind leaders Monaco on nine. Marseille have made a stuttering start, one win and two defeats leaving them 11th on three points, four adrift of tonight's hosts. The goal difference column is tight, plus two for Rennes and plus one for Marseille, so this is closer than the table suggests.
- Every Rennes match so far has been an open affair. They opened with a 2-2 home draw against Paris Saint-Germain, edged Le Mans 3-2 at home again and then won 2-1 away at Angers. Seven goals scored and five conceded in three games tells the story: the attack is firing, but the back line has given up chances in every fixture.
- Marseille started with a statement, thrashing Strasbourg 4-0 at home on matchday one, but have lost both games since. They went down 2-0 away at Monaco, now top of the table, and were then beaten 3-2 on their own ground by Paris FC, who currently sit third. Six goals in three games is encouraging, five conceded much less so.
- Rennes field two players returning to face their former club. Captain Valentin Rongier, 31, wore the armband at both Nantes and Marseille before taking it on here, and will sit in front of the back four as the side's holding midfielder. Behind him, goalkeeper Brice Samba, 32, also spent time at Marseille and was named Ligue 1's goalkeeper of the season in 2022-23 during his spell at Lens.
- Marseille reply with two ex-Rennes men in their starting eleven. Amine Gouiri, the 26-year-old Algeria international leading the line, came through the Lyon academy and progressed via Nice and Rennes before this move. At the back, Nayef Aguerd faces his old club too: the 190cm left-footed Morocco centre-back was a key figure in the run to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals and also played for West Ham.
- The midfield shape pits a three against a two. Rennes line up 4-3-3 with Rongier flanked by the 32-year-old Adrien Thomasson and Mahdi Camara, 28, a former Saint-Etienne captain who played Champions League football with Brest. Marseille's 4-2-3-1 leans on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, the 31-year-old Denmark international schooled at Bayern Munich with 184 Tottenham appearances behind him, partnered by Algeria's Imad Abdeli.
- Marseille's band of three carries serious quality. Igor Paixao, named Dutch player of the year in 2025, arrived from Feyenoord for a club-record fee and attacks from the left despite being right-footed. Angel Gomes, the former Manchester United academy player who grew into an England international at Lille, operates centrally, with Morocco's Amine Harit, a PSG youth product and ex-Schalke man, on the other flank.
- Rennes' front three is built on contrasting profiles. Esteban Lepaul, 26, climbed from the French lower divisions at Epinal and Orleans through Angers to become a penalty-box striker who also leads the press. Left-footed Ludovic Blas, 28, scored the decisive goal in the 2022 Coupe de France final for Nantes and provides the creative spark, while 25-year-old Senegalese Issa Soumare stretches defences with his pace.
- The flanks should decide plenty. Przemyslaw Frankowski, the 31-year-old Poland international at right-back for Rennes, was one of Ligue 1's most prolific crossers during his Lens years and likes to push high, which invites Paixao to attack the space behind him. On the opposite side, 21-year-old Cameroonian left-back Mamadou Nagida is set to deal with Timothy Weah, the USA international and former Juventus, Lille and PSG man.
- Both benches offer real game-changers. Rennes can introduce Poland's Sebastian Szymanski, who produced 22 goals and 30 assists at Fenerbahce, Jordan's Mousa Al-Tamari, a runner-up at the 2023 Asian Cup, and 21-year-old Eliezer Mayenda, a Premier League scorer with Sunderland. Marseille counter with Neal Maupay, 30, a veteran of Brighton, Everton and Brentford, and Ulisses Garcia, a four-time Swiss champion with Young Boys.
