Match Preview
- Le Mans, back in the top flight after 16 years, sit 14th on two points from three games (two draws, one defeat, five scored and six conceded) and are still chasing a first win, while RC Lens are 11th on three points from a win and two defeats. Lille lead the table with 10 points from four matches, and only a single point separates these two. It is the first meeting between them this season and both badly want momentum.
- Le Mans have competed in every game so far. They drew 2-2 at home with Brest on the opening weekend, lost 3-2 at Rennes and then took a 1-1 draw away at Nice. Five goals in three matches is an encouraging return for a promoted side, but six conceded explains why they have only two points, and a first home victory is the obvious target.
- Lens began by thrashing Auxerre 5-2 at home, then lost 2-1 at Strasbourg and 1-0 at home to Lorient. Just one goal across those two defeats underlines how quickly the early fireworks faded. An away trip to a promoted side is a chance to reset, but it is also the sort of fixture a club with their ambitions cannot afford to drop.
- The tactical picture pits two back threes against each other. Le Mans play 3-1-4-2 with 165cm Lucas Bourtel, 24, as the single pivot behind a four-man midfield band. Lens line up 3-4-2-1, pairing left-footed Michael Cuisance, 27, a Bayern Munich academy graduate, with 19-year-old Montenegro international Andrija Bulatovic in the middle, and using Poland's Michal Skoras, 26, and Ruben Aguilar, 33, as wing-backs.
- Lens carry their threat through the two players behind the striker. Florian Thauvin, 33, a World Cup winner with France in 2018, scored 86 goals in 281 appearances for Marseille and still cuts in from the right on his left foot. On the other side is Senegal's Abdallah Sima, 25 and 188cm, who joined permanently after scoring seven goals at Brest. Odsonne Edouard, 28 and 187cm, leads the line as the reference point.
- Lens mix experience and youth at the back. Jonathan Gradit, 33, has been a pillar of the defence since joining in 2019 and organises the middle of the three, flanked by 18-year-old Clairefontaine graduate Kilian Antonio and Matthieu Udol, 30, who spent years in the Metz academy. Behind them stands 192cm France Under-21 goalkeeper Robin Risser, 21, with five goals conceded in three games to correct.
- Le Mans counter with height and experience of their own. Samuel Yohou, the 35-year-old, 190cm Ivorian who has played in Greece with OFI Crete and for Paris FC, anchors the back three alongside 20-year-old academy product Noah Boisset and 29-year-old Harold Voyer. Ewan Atheou, 26 and schooled at Dijon, is in goal, and managing the aerial threat of Edouard and Sima will be the key to their afternoon.
- Le Mans hold serious top-flight pedigree in reserve. Habib Diallo, 31 and 186cm, was a Ligue 2 top scorer with 26 goals at Metz, netted 20 in Ligue 1 for Strasbourg and won the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. Alongside him on the bench is Djibril Sidibe, 34, a World Cup winner with France in 2018 whose career has taken in Monaco, Lille and Everton.
- Lens have plenty of options too. Thorgan Hazard, 33, the Belgium international who first made his name at Lens and returned to the club on a deal running to 2028, is joined by Mali's Amadou Haidara, 28, who spent seven seasons at RB Leipzig, and 35-year-old Florian Sotoca, a symbol of the club since 2019. Sixteen-year-old academy midfielder Meziane Mesroub is also in the squad.
