Match Preview
- This is the only meeting of two unbeaten sides on matchday five. Rennes are fourth on 10 points (3-1-0), Lyon fifth on eight (2-2-0), with Monaco setting the pace on 13 from five games and Paris FC second on 11. The profiles differ: Rennes have scored eight and conceded five, Lyon six and two.
- Lyon's W-D-W-D start has been built on a back line that has conceded only twice in four matches. They won 2-0 at Toulouse on the opening weekend, drew 1-1 at home with Le Havre, beat Auxerre 3-1 and then ground out a goalless draw at Paris FC. Their goal difference of plus four is better than fourth-placed Rennes' plus three.
- Rennes arrive on a run of D-W-W-W. They opened with a 2-2 draw at home against Paris Saint-Germain, edged promoted Le Mans 3-2, won 2-1 at Angers and then kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 home win over Marseille. Taking four points from fixtures against PSG and Marseille says plenty about their current level.
- There is a compelling captains' duel here. Lyon's Corentin Tolisso, 32, is an academy graduate, a 2018 World Cup winner with France and a Champions League winner with Bayern Munich, and he has worn the armband since 2025-26. Rennes counter with Valentin Rongier, 31, who captained both Nantes and Marseille before taking on the same responsibility in Brittany.
- The shape battle is Lyon's 4-2-3-1 against Rennes' 4-1-4-1. Liverpool academy product Tyler Morton, 23, partners Mads Bidstrup, who has passed through Brentford, RB Leipzig and Salzburg, in Lyon's double pivot. Rennes leave Rongier alone in front of the back four, with former Saint-Étienne captain Mahdi Camara and Adrien Thomasson, a scorer of 28 goals in 156 games for Strasbourg, in the line ahead of him.
- Lyon's creativity runs through Czech international Pavel Šulc, who wears No. 10 after scoring 47 goals in 167 appearances for Viktoria Plzeň, and Belgium striker Loïs Openda, back in Ligue 1 on a €3m loan from Juventus. They face a young Rennes centre-back pairing: 190cm Morocco prospect Abdelhamid Aït Boudlal, 20, and Charlie Cresswell, 24, the Leeds academy graduate who moved permanently to Toulouse in 2024.
- The flanks promise plenty too. Ernest Nuamah, the 22-year-old Ghana winger who was named Superliga player of the year at Nordsjælland, operates on Lyon's left, while Brazil international Abner pushes high from left-back. Rennes' right side features Poland international Przemysław Frankowski, one of Ligue 1's most prolific crossers during his Lens years, with left-footed winger Arnaud Nordin, a Saint-Étienne academy product via Montpellier and Mainz, ahead of him.
- The goalkeeping contest is a good one. Brice Samba, 32, was named Ligue 1's goalkeeper of the season in 2022-23 and has been a first choice at both Lens and Nottingham Forest. Lyon answer with 197cm Slovakia international Dominik Greif, who made more than 100 appearances for Slovan Bratislava and then sampled LaLiga with Mallorca.
- Both benches carry genuine attacking weight. Lyon can call on USA international Tanner Tessmann, who made 37 Serie A appearances with Venezia, 20-year-old Dane Noah Naati, a two-time Superliga young player of the month at Brøndby, and No. 11 Keito Nakamura. Rennes have Ludovic Blas, match-winner in the 2022 Coupe de France final, Jordan's Mousa Al-Tamari and Poland playmaker Sebastian Szymański, who produced 22 goals and 30 assists at Fenerbahçe.
