Match Preview
- Angers sit 13th on seven points from six matches (2-1-3, goal difference -3), one place and one point above Marseille, who are 14th with a 2-0-4 record and a +1 goal difference. Leaders Paris Saint-Germain are already on 14 points from seven games, so Marseille start this afternoon eight adrift of the summit — a startling position for the club after only six rounds.
- Marseille's recent sequence reads L-L-L-L-W. They were beaten 2-0 at Monaco in round two, 3-2 at home by Paris FC in round three, 1-0 at Rennes in round four and 2-1 at home by PSG in round five, before finally halting the slide with a 2-0 win away at Estac Troyes. Remarkably they have not drawn a single league match this season, which explains both the thin points tally and the positive goal difference.
- Angers arrive on the back of a volatile W-L-D-W-L run. They won 3-1 at Auxerre in round two and beat Troyes 2-0 at home in round five, but lost 2-1 at home to Rennes and were overwhelmed 5-1 away at Stade Brestois in round six. Ten goals conceded in six matches is the figure keeping them in the lower half despite two home-friendly results.
- There is a reunion in the away side. Marseille's No. 8 Himad Abdelli, a 27-year-old Algeria international attacking midfielder, came through Le Havre's academy but made his name as a first-team regular at Angers. He returns to his former ground in the second line of a 4-2-3-1, bringing the tempo control and the mix of assists and goals that defined his time here.
- Marseille's back four is improvised. Geoffrey Kondogbia, a 33-year-old holding midfielder by trade and captain of the Central African Republic, drops into defence after a career taking in Monaco, Inter, Valencia, Sevilla, Lens and Atletico Madrid. He partners CJ Egan-Riley, the 23-year-old Manchester City academy product who was named in the Championship team of the season with Burnley, with Euro 2020 winner Emerson Palmieri (32) and Timothy Weah (26) on the flanks.
- The midfield contrast is compelling. Angers pair Branco van den Boomen — the 188cm Dutchman on loan from Ajax, a dead-ball specialist who helped Toulouse win the Ligue 2 title — with Yassin Belkhdim (24), the academy graduate who leads the club for assists, and 21-year-old Emmanuel Biumla, a natural centre-back signed from Bordeaux. Marseille screen their defence with Tochukwu Nnadi (23), who emerged at Zulte Waregem and debuted for Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
- Igor Paixao is Marseille's most direct threat. Voted the Netherlands' player of the year in 2025 and signed from Feyenoord for a club-record fee, the 168cm Brazilian is right-footed on the left and looks to cut inside. Tracking him is Haiti right-back Carlens Arcus (30), a well-travelled defender whose career has taken in Lille, Troyes, Vitesse and Cercle Brugge, and who will need every bit of that experience.
- Angers' defensive line is strikingly young and makeshift. Mael Gernigon, a 17-year-old academy product born in 2009, starts alongside Louis Mouton, a 189cm midfielder by trade who came through Saint-Étienne and arrived via Pau, with Madagascar international Lillian Rao-Lisoa (26) on the right. Having shipped five goals at Brest last time out, containing Marseille's experienced attackers is the clear priority.
- Angers goalkeeper Anthony Lopes is 36 and spent roughly twelve seasons as Lyon's first choice, winning Euro 2016 with Portugal; his close-range reflex saves remain his calling card. The man leading Marseille's line, Amine Gouiri (26), is another Lyon academy graduate who built his reputation at Nice and Rennes before becoming the Algeria international spearhead here. Two Lyon pasts meet in the box.
- The benches tell different stories. Angers can call on teenagers: 19-year-old centre-forward Prosper Peter, who made his Ligue 1 debut in April 2025, left-footed Cameroonian winger Harouna Djibirin (19) and Anthony Bermont (21), the Ligue 2 young player of the year during his loan at Annecy. Marseille counter with Angel Gomes (26), the Manchester United academy graduate who matured at Lille, Nayef Aguerd (30), a 2022 World Cup semi-finalist with Morocco, and Premier League veteran Neal Maupay (30).
