Match Preview
- Second-placed Rennes head to tenth-placed Nice on matchday 9. Rennes have 16 points from 5 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats, sitting just a single point behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain on 17. Nice have 11 points from 3 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses; victory here would lift them to 14 and level them with fifth-placed Lyon and sixth-placed Paris FC.
- The contrast in style is written into the goal columns. Rennes have scored 18 in eight games but shipped 14, finishing with a goal difference of plus four, while Nice have the tighter and lower-scoring profile of 8 for and 10 against, minus two overall. All three of Nice's most recent wins finished 2-1, against Lille, Strasbourg and Brest, so one goal has repeatedly decided their matches.
- Rennes have alternated results, W-L-W-L-W, but the pattern beneath it is clear. All three wins in that run came at home: 1-0 against Marseille, 4-1 against Auxerre and 3-0 against Strasbourg. Both defeats came on the road and both were heavy, 4-0 at Lyon and 4-3 at Paris FC, which is the record they bring into another away fixture.
- Nice's number 10, Sofiane Diop (26), faces the club that raised him. A left winger who came through the Rennes academy before moving on via Monaco, the Morocco international is right-footed but thrives cutting in from the left, and is flexible enough to be used as a false nine or a wide midfielder. He arrives in form with six goals in 2025-26.
- Rennes build their attack around two left-footers. Sebastian Szymanski (27), the Poland international playing behind the strikers, won the Eredivisie with Feyenoord and racked up 22 goals and 30 assists in two and a half seasons at Fenerbahce. Alongside him, Mousa Al-Tamari (29) is the man they call the Jordanian Messi, the first Jordanian to play in a top-five European league after joining Montpellier, and a key figure in his country's run to the 2023 Asian Cup final.
- The visiting back three is an unusual mix of pathways. Anthony Rouault (25) and Charlie Cresswell (24) both arrived in Brittany via Toulouse, the Frenchman having sampled the Bundesliga and Champions League with Stuttgart, the Englishman having come through Leeds United's academy with a loan at Millwall. They are joined by 20-year-old Moroccan Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal, a 190cm centre-back from the Mohammed VI Academy who scored in a U17 AFCON final.
- Nice lead the line with two players who arrived through recent transfer business. Elye Wahi (23) scored 19 goals at Montpellier before a 35 million euro move to RC Lens, then passed through Marseille and Eintracht Frankfurt before joining Nice on loan in January 2026. Beside him is Mohamed Amoura (26), the Algeria international who came on loan with an option from Wolfsburg in September 2026 and was handed the number 9 shirt.
- In midfield experience, Rennes have the edge. Captain Valentin Rongier (31) has worn the armband at Nantes and Marseille as well, and Adrien Thomasson (32) brings 156 appearances and 28 goals from his Strasbourg days along with a Coupe de la Ligue winner's medal. Nice answer with 27-year-old Hicham Boudaoui, nicknamed the club's Swiss army knife for covering everything from the right flank to the holding role, and 17-year-old academy graduate Coulibaly, born in 2008.
- Both right flanks are patrolled by crossers who made their names at RC Lens. Jonathan Clauss (34) worked his way up from the lower divisions, earned a place in the Ligue 1 team of the season while at Lens, moved on via Marseille and played at EURO 2024. Przemyslaw Frankowski (31), the Poland right wing-back, also logged some of the division's highest crossing numbers at Lens, with spells at Galatasaray and Chicago Fire in MLS either side.
- Even the goalkeepers share a career path. Yehvann Diouf (26), the Senegal international, made 101 Ligue 1 appearances for Stade de Reims with one of the best save rates in the division before a seven million euro move to Nice in the summer of 2025. Rennes counter with 189cm Nicolas Lemaitre (29), who also passed through Stade de Reims and Troyes, the same two clubs on Diouf's CV.
