- Lyon arrive fifth on 14 points from eight games (4-2-2) with a +6 goal difference, one point behind fourth-placed Monaco and two off Rennes in third, while leaders Paris Saint-Germain sit on 20 from nine. Angers are 15th with eight points and a -6 difference, level on points with Troyes in 16th. The stakes at either end of the table could hardly be more different.
- The form lines split sharply between home and away. Lyon have won their last two at home, 4-0 against Rennes and 2-1 against Nice, but lost 2-1 at Lens and 2-0 at Paris Saint-Germain on the road. Angers were beaten 5-1 at Brest and 5-2 at home by Marseille before steadying with a goalless draw against Lorient last time out; nine goals scored and 15 conceded in eight matches sums up their season so far.
- Anthony Lopes returns to the ground he called home for roughly 12 seasons. The 36-year-old left-footed goalkeeper was Lyon's undisputed No.1 before moving on via Nantes, and he was part of Portugal's Euro 2016-winning squad. Facing him is Dominik Greif, the 197cm Slovakia international who made more than 100 appearances for Slovan Bratislava and sampled LaLiga with Mallorca.
- Lyon's engine room is built around captain Corentin Tolisso. The 32-year-old came through the club's own academy, won the 2018 World Cup with France and the Champions League with Bayern Munich, and still supplies box-to-box drive. Beside him are Tanner Tessmann, the 188cm USA holding midfielder named 2024 US Young Male Player of the Year after 37 Serie A outings with Venezia, and Mads Bidstrup, a 175cm Dane who has passed through Brentford, RB Leipzig and Salzburg.
- The home front three has Ernest Nuamah on the left, the 23-year-old Ghana international (18 caps, four goals) who was voted Danish Superliga Player of the Year at Nordsjaelland, with 20-year-old Belgian Julien Duranville on the opposite flank, a 170cm dribbler signed from Borussia Dortmund on a contract running to 2031, and No.11 Keito Nakamura through the middle. Angers answer on that side with Haiti's Carlens Arcus and Madagascar international Lilian Raolisoa.
- Angers defend with a back five, and a tall one at that. Ousmane Camara, the 197cm Mali international who came through Paris FC and signed a long-term extension in 2025, partners left-footed 33-year-old Jordan Lefort, a veteran of Amiens, Young Boys and Strasbourg. Lyon can match that aerially through 190cm Senegal centre-back Moussa Niakhate, a former Mainz captain with Nottingham Forest on his CV, and 190cm Austrian Felix Bacher, so set pieces should be fiercely contested.
- Branco van den Boomen is the visitors' creative hub. The 188cm Dutchman, on loan from Ajax, won the Ligue 2 title with Toulouse and is a genuine set-piece specialist, which matters a great deal for a side with only nine goals in eight games. He is flanked by Yassin Belkhdim, the 24-year-old academy graduate from FC Mantois who leads Angers for assists this season, and Morocco's Amine Sbai, who likes to cut inside from the left.
- The visiting attack pairs 19-year-old Prosper Peter with 32-year-old Haris Belkebla, a 13-year age gap. Peter joined the Angers academy at 14, signed professional terms in September 2024 and made his Ligue 1 debut in April 2025. Belkebla is a central midfielder by trade, an Algeria international who helped Brest win promotion, and how he uses that experience in the front two, either dropping in or pressing Lyon's deep midfielders, is one of the tactical keys.
- Both benches carry weight. Lyon can turn to Nicolas Tagliafico, a 2022 World Cup winner with Argentina and a three-time Eredivisie champion with Ajax, and Clinton Mata, a three-time Belgian champion with Club Brugge, alongside 21-year-old Dane Noah Nartey, who scored on his Ligue 1 debut. Angers keep back Anthony Belmont, the 21-year-old Lens academy product who was named Ligue 2 young player of the year while on loan at Annecy.
