Club History

Founded in 1905 by businessman Gus Mears in Fulham, west London, Chelsea have a unique origin story: the club was created specifically to fill an existing stadium, Stamford Bridge. Their first league championship came in 1954-55, followed by FA Cup and UEFA Cup Winners' Cup triumphs in the early 1970s.

The transformative moment arrived in 2003 when Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich purchased the club. Under Jose Mourinho, Chelsea claimed back-to-back league titles in 2004-05 and 2005-06. In 2012, they defeated Bayern Munich on penalties to win the UEFA Champions League for the first time, becoming the first London club to lift the trophy. The Abramovich era yielded 21 major trophies across 19 years.

In 2022, the BlueCo consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital completed a £4.25 billion takeover. The new ownership has embarked on an ambitious, large-scale investment strategy to reshape the squad.

The BlueCo Era

Under BlueCo, Chelsea have engaged in an unprecedented level of transfer spending, investing over £1 billion on players in the first two years alone. The strategy relies heavily on long-term contracts of up to eight years, spreading the amortisation of transfer fees to manage Financial Fair Play compliance.

Clearlake Capital holds a 61.5% majority stake, making this one of football's most prominent examples of private equity ownership. The multi-club model extends to Strasbourg in Ligue 1, enabling player development pathways and strategic synergies across the portfolio.

Playing Style

Liam Rosenior was appointed in January 2026, replacing Enzo Maresca on a six-and-a-half-year deal. A former defender who played for Fulham, Hull City, and Brighton, Rosenior previously managed Hull City in the Championship and Strasbourg in Ligue 1. He advocates combining "the beautiful with the practical."

His preferred system is 3-4-2-1, transitioning to 3-2-5 in possession and 4-2-3-1 out of possession. Build-up play begins deep, with the goalkeeper integrated into the back line to draw opponents forward and create central overloads. Wing-backs push high to provide width, while attacking midfielders drift into half-spaces. Out of possession, Rosenior demands intense counter-pressing; at Strasbourg, his team recorded the second-most high turnovers in Ligue 1.

Stamford Bridge

Originally opened in 1877, Stamford Bridge has been Chelsea's home since the club's founding in 1905. Today it holds 40,341 spectators. Once capable of hosting nearly 100,000 fans, successive safety regulations and all-seater conversion reduced its capacity to its current size.

It remains the smallest ground among the Premier League's traditional top six. Expansion plans under BlueCo envision a potential 60,000-capacity redevelopment, though significant planning and land challenges mean this remains a long-term project. Situated on Fulham Road, the stadium is an enduring icon of London football culture.
