Founded in 1880 by members of St. Mark's Church in Manchester, the club became Ardwick AFC in 1887 before adopting the name Manchester City FC in 1894. For much of their history, City oscillated between the top two divisions, though a golden era in the late 1960s under Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison brought the league title, FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup.
The 2008 acquisition by the Abu Dhabi United Group, led by Sheikh Mansour, transformed the club's trajectory. Huge investment brought world-class talent, and Sergio Aguero's last-gasp goal in 2012 delivered a first league title in 44 years. The appointment of Pep Guardiola in 2016 elevated City to unprecedented heights: a treble of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in 2022-23, followed by a historic four consecutive league titles in 2023-24 -- a feat never before achieved in 136 years of English top-flight football.
Pep Guardiola has signed a contract extension through 2027 and is now in his tenth season at the helm. His base formation is a 4-3-3, but the build-up regularly features goalkeeper involvement, false nines and inverted full-backs -- hallmarks of his relentless tactical innovation.
The January 2025 arrivals of Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Nico Gonzalez -- a combined outlay exceeding 170 million euros -- signalled serious intent. Summer recruits Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki have further refreshed the squad after Kevin De Bruyne's departure, yet the core philosophy of positional play and aggressive pressing remains firmly intact.
Originally built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the stadium became City's home in 2003 when they relocated from Maine Road. Renamed the Etihad Stadium in 2011 through a sponsorship deal with Etihad Airways, the ground was expanded in 2015 with a third tier on the South Stand, bringing capacity to approximately 53,400.
An ongoing expansion of the North Stand is set for completion by the end of 2026, which will increase the total capacity to around 62,000 -- making it one of the largest club grounds in England.
In 2023-24, City clinched a record fourth consecutive Premier League title. Phil Foden scored twice in a 3-1 final-day victory over West Ham to hold off Arsenal's challenge. The achievement capped a remarkable run of six titles in seven seasons under Guardiola, cementing City's status as the dominant force in English football.
However, the club faces 115 charges from the Premier League relating to alleged financial regulation breaches spanning 2009 to 2018. An independent commission hearing concluded in December 2024, but as of April 2026 no verdict has been delivered. Potential sanctions -- including a significant points deduction -- continue to cast a shadow over the club's future.
