- The 2026-27 campaign opens with Arsenal hosting newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates. Both sides line up in a 4-3-3, with Arsenal building around captain Martin Odegaard as the attacking midfielder and Declan Rice in central midfield. The intriguing wrinkle is Myles Lewis-Skelly, a left-back by trade, starting in the midfield three: the 19-year-old Hale End graduate tucking inside is designed to create a numerical edge against Coventry's central trio.
- Viktor Gyokeres returns to face the club that made him, from the substitutes' bench. After loan spells at Swansea City and St. Pauli during his Brighton days, the Swede's career finally took off at Coventry City, and from there he produced a staggering 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting CP before joining Arsenal. If the 28-year-old comes on, it will be against the club that gave him his platform, now as the genuine number nine Arsenal had long lacked.
- Coventry's bench includes 29-year-old Japanese attacker Tatsuhiro Sakamoto. He climbed from Montedio Yamagata to Cerezo Osaka, then moved to Belgium with Oostende before landing in England, showing a real knack for adapting abroad. At 170cm he relies on tight, quick dribbling and one-v-one threat from wide areas. A Premier League debut for his club away at the Emirates would be some stage on which to appear.
- Coventry's centre-back pairing is enormous: 194cm Aurele Amenda alongside 193cm Bobby Thomas. Amenda, 23, established himself as a teenager at Young Boys before a move to Eintracht Frankfurt, and is comfortable enough on the ball to help build from the back. Thomas, 25, came through Burnley's academy and hardened himself on loan at Barrow, Bristol Rovers and Barnsley. The question is whether 193cm Kai Havertz can drag that wall out of shape by dropping in as a false nine.
- Bukayo Saka against Jay Dasilva is the duel to watch on the right. Saka, Arsenal's academy-reared talisman, cuts inside on his left foot to shoot or thread through balls, with Ben White behind him stepping into midfield as an inverted full-back. Dasilva, 28, is only 170cm but plays with a low centre of gravity, having come through Chelsea's academy before years as a first-choice full-back at Bristol City. How long he can delay Saka's threat will shape the flank.
- Coventry's tempo runs through 31-year-old Matt Grimes. The left-footed holding midfielder emerged at Exeter City and captained Swansea City for years, with spells at Leeds United and Blackburn Rovers along the way, and specialises in calm circulation and accurate distribution. Beside him sits Nigeria international Frank Onyeka, a Midtjylland graduate who spent his English years at Brentford and brings volume of running and bite in the duels. Between them they must resist Rice's range and Odegaard's playmaking.
- The promoted side's front three is a study in contrasts. Ellis Simms, 25 and 191cm, came through Everton and scored his way through loans at Blackpool and Hearts before joining Sunderland. Brandon Thomas-Asante, 27 and just 175cm, climbed from non-league Salford City via MK Dons to West Brom, and presses relentlessly while running in behind. Rhoum Chaouna, 22, moved from Rennes' academy to Salernitana and Lazio before crossing to England. Left-footed Gabriel Magalhaes and 22-year-old Valencia product Cristhian Mosquera must handle all three.
- Arsenal's bench underlines the gulf in resources. Eberechi Eze, the driving force behind Crystal Palace's 2025 FA Cup triumph, sits alongside Martin Zubimendi, the cerebral Spain anchor signed from Real Sociedad, and Mikel Merino, a Euro 2024 winner. Noni Madueke, the left-footed right winger recruited from Chelsea, is there too. So are 19-year-old Ethan Nwaneri, who holds the record as the Premier League's youngest ever player, and 16-year-old Max Dowman, who debuted at 15.
- Coventry are not short of experience in reserve either. Taiwo Awoniyi, the Nigeria international who became a record-breaking Bundesliga scorer at Union Berlin, waits on the bench; the 29-year-old spent his Liverpool years on loan at Mainz and Mouscron and won the U-17 World Cup. Joel Latibeaudiere, a Manchester City academy product now capped by Jamaica, 191cm left-footed centre-back Liam Kitching and homegrown midfielder Josh Eccles, who helped drive the promotion campaign from central midfield, all offer options as the game stretches.
