Match Preview
- Hull City open their Premier League campaign at home on matchday one, lining up in a 3-4-2-1 with a four-man midfield band and wing-backs Ryan Giles and Lewie Coyle providing the width. Manchester United answer with a 4-2-3-1: Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos as the double pivot, captain Bruno Fernandes in the hole, and Patrick Dorgu and Bryan Mbeumo on the flanks.
- Hull's back three pairs 32-year-old Semi Ajayi, a 193cm Nigeria international, with Ireland stalwart John Egan, 33, alongside the young Nobel Mendy. Ajayi came through Arsenal's academy, earned his stripes at AFC Wimbledon and Rotherham and became a Championship regular at West Brom; his aerial strength will be tested immediately by Matheus Cunha, the 183cm Brazilian signed from Wolves for £62.5m.
- Harry Maguire returns to a former club: the 33-year-old centre-back lists Hull City alongside Leicester and Sheffield United among his previous sides. At 194cm he wins his duels in the air and carries the ball forward out of defence. There is a Bramall Lane subplot too, with Hull starting Oli McBurnie, who drove Sheffield United's promotion push, and Regan Slater, another Blades academy graduate.
- Paddy McNair waits on the Hull bench with a story of his own. The 31-year-old Northern Ireland international came through Manchester United's academy before long spells as a first-teamer at Sunderland and Middlesbrough, and his versatility means he can slot in as one of the three centre-backs or drop into midfield as a holder.
- The left flank offers the first real duel. Giles, 26, was schooled at Wolverhampton and sharpened by loans at Coventry, Rotherham, Middlesbrough and Cardiff, and the volume and quality of his left-footed delivery ranked among the best in the EFL. Behind him lurks Mbeumo, a £71m arrival from Brentford whose left-footed cut-ins and runs in behind are lethal, with Noussair Mazraoui — ex-Ajax and Bayern Munich — tucking inside off the right.
- United stack their left with Dorgu, a 21-year-old whose natural position is left-back, pushed a line higher in front of 31-year-old Luke Shaw. The Dane brought explosive pace and overlapping runs from his Serie A days at Lecce, and Shaw, scorer in the Euro 2020 final, adds another crossing threat. Coyle, Hull's 30-year-old right-back, is only 173cm but never backs out of a duel and rarely stops running.
- Midfield quality could settle the rhythm of the match. Tielemans, 29, scored in an FA Cup final with Leicester and reads the game with a broad passing range, while 22-year-old Andrey Santos arrived via Vasco da Gama and loans at Strasbourg and Nottingham Forest, offering box-to-box legs. Hull counter with 191cm Matt Crooks, 32, who flirted with double figures at Rotherham and Middlesbrough, and the industrious Slater.
- Japan international Hidemasa Morita, 31, is on Hull's books but is not in the matchday squad. He won the J.League with Kawasaki Frontale after arriving from Ryutsu Keizai University, then earned a move to Sporting via Santa Clara and lifted a Portuguese title, combining stamina, ball-winning and distribution. With Giles, Slater, Crooks and Coyle picked in midfield, his Premier League bow must wait.
- Mohamed Belloumi, one of Hull's two shadow strikers, is the 24-year-old son of Algerian great Lakhdar Belloumi. Standing 174cm, he built his reputation moving from MC Oran to Farense in Portugal and is happy to take defenders on from either flank. He runs into 19-year-old Ayden Heaven, the 189cm left-footed centre-back prised from Arsenal's academy who turned down Barcelona and thrives under pressure.
- The benches tell the story of the gap in resources. United can call on 195cm Benjamin Sesko, an €85m arrival after 39 goals at RB Leipzig, plus 193cm Joshua Zirkzee, FA Cup final scorer Kobbie Mainoo and Leny Yoro, who made his Ligue 1 debut for Lille at 16. Hull's alternatives are Matt Targett, a Premier League performer with Aston Villa and Newcastle, the left-footed Kieran Dowell and Canada winger Liam Millar, a Liverpool academy product.
