Match Preview
- This is the season opener for both clubs, so neither has a point on the board yet. Among the sides who have already played, Arsenal top the table on three points with a plus-three goal difference, while promoted Hull City, Ipswich and Leeds all took three points from their first outing. With the table already moving, Brentford badly want to open their home campaign with a win.
- The shapes do not match: Brentford's 4-2-3-1 against Tottenham's 4-3-2-1. Spurs pack the centre with Sandro Tonali as the anchor plus Conor Gallagher and Lucas Bergvall, while Brentford answer with a double pivot of Mamadou Sangaré and Mathias Jensen. Brentford's three attacking midfielders, Kevin Schade, Vitaly Janelt and Dango Ouattara, will have to work back if the hosts are not to be outnumbered in midfield.
- Brentford's focal point is Igor Thiago, a 25-year-old, 191cm Brazilian who was named UECL Young Player of the Season at Club Brugge and picked up a Premier League Player of the Month award in 2025-26. His hold-up play and power in front of goal will be handled by left-footed Argentine centre-back Marcos Senesi, a former Feyenoord captain, and 189cm Dutchman Jan Paul van Hecke.
- At the other end Brentford answer height with height. Ireland international Nathan Collins, 193cm, was once Stoke City's youngest captain and was handed the club captaincy at Brentford from 2025-26 at the age of 25. He partners 198cm Norway international Kristoffer Ajer, a three-time Scottish champion with Celtic, in trying to smother Richarlison, the 29-year-old Brazilian whose game is built on aerial duels and hold-up play.
- Midfield billing belongs to Tonali, 26, the Italy international dubbed the 'new Pirlo' who arrived via AC Milan and Newcastle United. From the base of midfield he dictates tempo with long, accurate passing and an excellent scan of the pitch. Sangaré, a 24-year-old left-footed Mali international schooled in the Red Bull Salzburg system and an Africa Cup of Nations participant in 2025, is charged with breaking that rhythm up.
- There is a strong Bournemouth thread running through both squads. Brentford's Dango Ouattara, a 24-year-old Burkina Faso international, joined for a club-record fee from Bournemouth, and Jaidon Anthony, who scored 10 goals on the south coast, waits on the bench. For Tottenham, Senesi also came from Bournemouth, while substitute Dominic Solanke moved to Spurs for a club-record fee after a 19-goal season there.
- The goalkeeping contrast is worth watching. Brentford's Caoimhín Kelleher, a 27-year-old Ireland international, won a Premier League title and the Champions League at Liverpool and has a reputation for shoot-out nerve and comfort with the ball at his feet. Tottenham field 23-year-old Czech international Antonín Kinský, a 190cm shot-stopper who has grown into the role since arriving from Slavia Prague in January 2025.
- The full-back battles are unusual on both sides. Brentford use natural winger Keane Lewis-Potter, 25, a Hull City product, on the left and 22-year-old Fiorentina graduate Michael Kayode on the right. Tottenham counter with Scotland captain Andrew Robertson, 32, whose crossing and overlapping remain his trademarks, and 20-year-old Archie Gray, the Leeds United academy product who can cover midfield and full-back.
- The benches may settle it. Tottenham can turn to set-piece specialist James Maddison, 29, Rodrigo Bentancur, a three-time Serie A champion with Juventus, and 22-year-old Portugal midfielder Mateus Fernandes, signed from Southampton for more than £40m. Brentford's cards are Mikkel Damsgaard, a driving force behind Denmark's EURO 2020 run, and 34-year-old Callum Wilson, who arrived on a free from Newcastle United.
