Match Preview
- This is the season opener for both Brighton and Aston Villa. Twelve clubs have already played once, with Arsenal top on three points and a goal difference of plus three, so both sides are only now joining the race. At the American Express Stadium, Fabian Hurzeler's Brighton and Unai Emery's Villa have each set up in a 4-2-3-1, promising a head-on tactical clash.
- Brighton are without Kaoru Mitoma, their first-choice left winger, who does not appear in the matchday squad. The 29-year-old, born in May 1997, arrived from Kawasaki Frontale via a loan at Royale Union Saint-Gilloise and has tormented Premier League defenders with his changes of pace. Carlos Baleba, Yankuba Minteh and Matt O'Riley are also absent from the eighteen, leaving Hurzeler to reshape his attack.
- Brighton's back line is built around 19-year-old Luka Vuskovic. The 190cm left-footed centre-back joined from Hajduk Split via Tottenham and made his Croatia debut at just 16. Alongside him are Olivier Boscagli, a 28-year-old left-footed defender who played Champions League football at PSV, and Mats Wieffer, a natural defensive midfielder now deployed in the back four at 26.
- The double pivot pairs 35-year-old Pascal Gross with 22-year-old Yasin Ayari, a 13-year age gap. Gross returned to Brighton from Borussia Dortmund in January 2026 and remains the side's chief set-piece taker and playmaker. Ayari, a 172cm technician developed at AIK in Sweden, is charged with turning out of tight spaces and beating Villa's press with his close control.
- Georginio Rutter leads the line at 24. The Frenchman, who previously played for Leeds United, Hoffenheim and Stade Rennais, is at his best as a second striker or number ten, creating through inventive dribbling and through balls. Behind him sits Maxim De Cuyper, a 25-year-old Belgium international who is a left-back by trade; the crossing accuracy he honed at Club Brugge could be decisive from an advanced role.
- Villa's midfield features this summer's marquee signing, Joao Gomes. The Brazilian holding midfielder arrived from Wolverhampton Wanderers in summer 2026 for a reported 34 million pounds plus add-ons after making 35 league appearances last season. He is joined centrally by Boubacar Kamara, the 26-year-old France anchor schooled at Marseille, 189cm Ross Barkley at 32, and vice-captain John McGinn, 31, giving Emery four central bodies.
- Experience defines the Villa defence. Pau Torres, the 29-year-old Spain international and 192cm left-footed centre-back who reached a Europa League final with Villarreal, partners Victor Lindelof, the 32-year-old Sweden international who spent years as a Manchester United regular. Ian Maatsen, 24, played in a Champions League final while on loan at Dortmund, and Poland's Matty Cash, 29, supplies width from the right.
- The goalkeeping picture is intriguing on both sides. Villa start Marco Bizot, the 35-year-old who featured in the Champions League with Stade Brestois, while Zion Suzuki waits on the bench wearing the number one shirt. Brighton counter with 194cm Bart Verbruggen, a 24-year-old Netherlands international from Anderlecht whose distribution and long passing make him the first step in Hurzeler's build-up.
- Both benches are stacked with young attacking options. Villa can call on Alejandro Garnacho, the 22-year-old Argentina winger signed from Manchester United for 40 million pounds, and Alysson, a 20-year-old Brazilian who made 38 appearances for Gremio in 2025. Brighton hold back 19-year-old striker Charalampos Kostoulas, signed from Olympiacos, and Ghana's Ibrahim Osman, a 21-year-old left winger.
- Youth in the starting elevens is another storyline. Villa hand a midfield role to academy graduate George Hemmings, born in March 2007 and still 19, while Brighton trust the same age group in defence through Vuskovic. How these calls are rewarded over 90 minutes will say something about how both managers intend to run their season.
