Match Preview
- Both sides are chasing their first point of the campaign after opening-day defeats. Sunderland lost 1-2 away at Ipswich and sit 15th; Fulham were edged out 2-3 at home by Chelsea and sit 14th. Each has a goal difference of minus one and zero points, and with leaders Manchester City already on six from two games, neither can afford to drift.
- Arsenal old boys are scattered across both teamsheets. Sunderland field Granit Xhaka, the 33-year-old Switzerland captain who won titles at Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen, alongside Dan Ballard, an Arsenal academy graduate with more than 30 Northern Ireland caps. Fulham counter with goalkeeper Bernd Leno, 30-year-old academy product Alex Iwobi, and Emile Smith Rowe waiting on the bench.
- The holding-midfield matchup could define the rhythm. Sunderland pair Xhaka, whose left foot supplies both long-range shooting and switches of play, with 21-year-old DR Congo international Noah Sadiki, a 173cm technician who joined Anderlecht's academy at six. Fulham answer with 195cm Norway anchor Sander Berge and Iwobi, a natural left winger who has thrived in a deeper role under Marco Silva.
- Fulham's attacking quartet is strikingly young. Gonzalo Garcia, 22, leads the line after equalling the Real Madrid Castilla record with 25 goals in a season. Beside him are 21-year-old Cesar Palacios, a Spain Under-19 international also schooled at Madrid, and 19-year-old Josh King, who came through Fulham's academy from Under-9 level and made his Premier League debut at 17. Oscar Bobb, 23, arrived from Manchester City for £27m.
- Sunderland's defence offers the opposite profile: hard-won experience. Thomas Meunier, 34, has 76 Belgium caps and spells at Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund behind him. Nordi Mukiele, 28, is a France international comfortable at centre-back or right-back after his time at PSG, and Reinildo Mandava, 32, made 99 appearances for Atletico Madrid and became the first Mozambican to play in the Premier League.
- Sunderland's centre-forward is Brian Brobbey, the 24-year-old Dutchman who scored 56 goals in 163 appearances for Ajax before a €20m move, and whose game is built on power and running in behind. He meets a familiar backdrop: Calvin Bassey, Fulham's 2024-25 player of the year and himself a former Ajax defender, partnered by 192cm Denmark international Joachim Andersen.
- Sunderland's support line is worth watching. Enzo Le Fee, the 26-year-old France-born midfielder who turned a Roma loan into a permanent deal worth around £19.3m, provides close control and tempo, while Nilson Angulo — an Ecuador winger signed from Anderlecht for roughly £17.5m in the January 2026 window — attacks with pace off the left. The third slot goes to Trai Hume, a natural right-back with 22 Northern Ireland caps.
- The goalkeeping duel spans 11 years. Sunderland trust 23-year-old Robin Roefs, a rare 193cm left-hander who emerged at NEC Nijmegen and offers accurate distribution as well as sharp reactions. Fulham have Bernd Leno, the 34-year-old German with Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen behind him, still valued for his reflex shot-stopping and calm on the ball.
- Two club-record signings start among the substitutes. Sunderland can call on Habib Diarra, the 22-year-old Senegal midfielder bought for a club-record £30m who was part of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad. Fulham hold back Kevin, the Brazilian winger named player of the year at Shakhtar Donetsk before a £34.6m move. Morocco's Chemsdine Talbi and Rodrigo Muniz add further attacking options late on.
