Match Preview
- Manchester United begin their home campaign with nothing on the board. They were beaten 2-0 away at Hull City on the opening weekend and sit 16th on zero points from their only fixture so far. Ipswich arrive 10th after a 2-1 home win over Sunderland gave them three points from their single outing. Manchester City lead the table with six points from two, level with the Hull side who beat United.
- Both teams line up in a 4-2-3-1, so the shapes mirror each other. United put Matheus Cunha at the tip with Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo behind him; Ipswich lead with Emerson and support him with Daizen Maeda, Julio Enciso and Fatawu Issahaku. With the systems matching up, the double pivots will decide who sets the tempo.
- Daizen Maeda starts on the left for Ipswich. The 28-year-old built his career at Matsumoto Yamaga, Mito Hollyhock and Yokohama F. Marinos, winning the J1 golden boot, before nearly five years at Celtic that brought a haul of Scottish silverware. Only 173cm tall, he combines extraordinary raw pace with the stamina to press relentlessly from the front — a direct problem for Lisandro Martínez and Harry Maguire, who are asked to build from the back.
- United's attack has been rebuilt at vast expense. Matheus Cunha, the 27-year-old Brazilian who cost £62.5m from Wolves, is an Olympic gold medallist from Tokyo who can hold the ball up, create and finish. On the right, Bryan Mbeumo arrived for £71m after scoring 20 goals for Brentford; the left-footed Cameroon international's cut inside and strike is the single most reliable route to goal in this side.
- The Rashford–Bruno axis is worth watching. Rashford, 28, is back at his boyhood club after a spell at Barcelona and remains the left-sided runner who once hit 30 goals in the 2022-23 season. Bruno Fernandes, 31, is the captain and the source of both goals and assists, with set-piece delivery to match. If Ipswich sit deep, these two will be the ones asked to unpick the block.
- The two holding midfielders share an odd bit of history. Kobbie Mainoo, 21, is the academy graduate whose FA Cup final goal announced him before a place in England's EURO 2024 squad; his partner Youri Tielemans, 29, scored in an FA Cup final of his own with Leicester and brings vision plus a serious long-range shot. Ipswich answer with Chile's left-footed Marcelino Núñez and 30-year-old Serbia international Saša Lukić.
- Ipswich have height across the back. Issa Diop, 194cm, was a Ligue 1 regular at Toulouse as a teenager before a big move to West Ham and arrived via Fulham; alongside him, 189cm Republic of Ireland international Dara O'Shea likes to step out and attack the ball. Jacob Greaves, a left-footed centre-back developed at Hull City, provides distribution from the left of the pair, with Leif Davis — a Leeds academy product and a perennial EFL assist leader — at left-back.
- The goalkeeping contrast is striking. Ipswich's Kjell Scherpen stands 206cm, among the tallest in Europe; the 26-year-old came through Emmen and Ajax before Brighton took him and then sent him around Vitesse, Oostende, Sturm Graz and Union Saint-Gilloise, and he dominates crosses through sheer reach. United's Senne Lammens is 193cm and 24, signed from Royal Antwerp and quickly established thanks to sharp reflexes and a reputation for saving penalties.
- United's bench carries genuine weight. Benjamin Šeško, the 195cm Slovenia international bought for €85m after 39 goals at RB Leipzig, sits alongside Joshua Zirkzee, the 193cm Netherlands forward who came through Bayern and drove Bologna into the Champions League, and Leny Yoro, the 20-year-old centre-back who made his Ligue 1 debut for Lille at 16. Whether chasing or protecting, United have the better options to turn to.
- Ipswich have game-changers of their own in reserve. Chuba Akpom, 30, is an Arsenal academy graduate who won the Championship golden boot with Middlesbrough in 2022-23 and has since played in Greece with PAOK as well as for Ajax and Lille. Jack Clarke, 25, is the Leeds-schooled left winger who blossomed at Sunderland, reaching double figures in the Championship with his trademark cut inside and right-footed finish.
