Match Preview
- The opening two rounds have already split these sides in two. Hull City sit third with six points and a +3 goal difference after winning both of their fixtures, while Aston Villa are 19th, still pointless and carrying a -5 goal difference. With Manchester City already on nine points from three games at the top, Villa can ill afford to stall again here.
- The cleanest contrast is Hull's watertight defence against Villa's blank scoresheet. Hull have yet to concede, seeing off Manchester United 2-0 at home on the opening weekend before winning 1-0 at Coventry in round two. Villa have yet to score, losing 4-0 away at Brighton and then 1-0 at home to Arsenal.
- Ending that drought falls first to Nicolas Jackson. The 25-year-old Senegal striker stands 187cm, returned to the Premier League after his Chelsea spell and a stint at Villarreal, and brings 32 caps, eight international goals and a 2022 World Cup to the role. He runs into Semi Ajayi, a 193cm centre-back with Nigeria caps, and John Egan, the 33-year-old who has spent years anchoring Ireland's back line.
- The two goalkeepers arrive from very different routes. Villa's No.1 is Japan international Zion Suzuki, a 190cm 24-year-old whose command of crosses and reflexes carried him from Urawa Red Diamonds to Parma in Serie A and on to Villa Park; five goals conceded in two matches is a start he needs to arrest. Opposite him is Konstantinos Tzolakis, 23, signed from Olympiacos for a club-record fee of around £20m after winning the 2024 UEFA Conference League.
- Hull's 5-4-1 against Villa's 4-2-3-1 turns the flanks into the decisive ground. Ryan Giles operates as the left wing-back, and the volume and quality of his left-footed delivery is rated among the best in the EFL. He is matched against Poland right-back Matty Cash, whose own up-and-down output rarely drops. On the other side, the 173cm Louie Coyle, who never backs out of a duel, deals with Ian Maatsen, a Champions League finalist during his loan spell at Borussia Dortmund.
- The battle at the base of midfield could decide the tempo. Lucas Gourna-Douath, 23, made his professional debut at 16 with Saint-Étienne, won a league title with Red Bull Salzburg and spent a loan at Roma, and now shields Hull's back five as a France U21 anchor. Villa answer with Boubacar Kamara, a Marseille academy product who broke through at 17, alongside the 189cm Ross Barkley. Between the lines, Emiliano Buendia, once a Championship Player of the Season at Norwich, must find pockets against Hull's four-man midfield screen.
- Hull's bench carries a familiar face for the visitors: Matt Targett spent his Premier League years at Aston Villa. The 30-year-old left-back came through Southampton's academy and has also served Newcastle, Fulham and Middlesbrough, giving him arguably the strongest top-flight résumé in the Hull squad. Should Giles tire, an introduction against his old club is very much on the cards.
- Two Sheffield United graduates lead Hull's line and drive their midfield. Oli McBurnie, 30, is a 188cm Scotland international whose physical hold-up play was central to Sheffield United's promotion to the Premier League, and he later spent time in Spain with Las Palmas. Reagan Slater, from the same academy, stands just 173cm but covers the ground between the boxes and takes on the unglamorous balancing work.
- If Villa are to open their account, their bench may be the lever. Alejandro Garnacho, the Argentina winger signed from Manchester United for £40m, sits alongside Tammy Abraham, the 194cm forward who has played for Roma and Besiktas, and Alisson, the 20-year-old Brazilian winger who made 38 appearances for Gremio. Spain's left-footed centre-back Pau Torres is also in reserve, so the closing stages may hinge on who uses their substitutions better.
