Match Preview
- Coventry sit bottom of the table on zero points, beaten in all three matches and yet to score, with five conceded: 0-3 at Arsenal, 0-1 at home to Hull City and 0-1 at Manchester City. Brighton arrive 12th on four points from a win, a draw and a defeat, and their eight goals scored stand in stark contrast to the blank column alongside the hosts' name.
- Brighton have swung between extremes. They swept Aston Villa aside 4-0 at home on the opening weekend, then lost a 4-3 shootout at Chelsea before being held 1-1 by Leeds. Eight scored and five conceded in three games describes a side that creates freely but leaves the door ajar, and closing it against a pointless opponent is the task here.
- The shape battle pits Coventry's 3-4-2-1 against Brighton's 4-2-3-1. Every home centre-back is a tower: Ethan Pinnock at 194cm, Bobby Thomas at 193cm and Switzerland's Aurèle Amenda at 194cm. Brighton's lone striker is 19-year-old Charalampos Kostoulas, signed from Olympiacos and valued for his hold-up play and finishing, so something has to give.
- The goalkeeping contrast is worth watching. Carl Rushworth, 25, was developed at Brighton and now guards the Coventry goal, well regarded for his distribution and command of his box. Facing him is Netherlands international Bart Verbruggen, a 194cm 24-year-old whose long limbs help his shot-stopping and whose footwork makes him the first phase of the away build-up.
- Taiwo Awoniyi leads the Coventry line. The Nigeria international became a record scorer for Union Berlin in the Bundesliga, has been on the books at Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, and won a U-17 World Cup along the way. The 29-year-old will be picked up by a pairing separated by 15 years: 34-year-old one-club legend Lewis Dunk and 19-year-old Luka Vušković, signed from Hajduk Split.
- In midfield, Matt Grimes sets the tempo with his left foot. The 31-year-old emerged at Exeter and captained Swansea for years, and alongside him Nigeria's Frank Onyeka, a Midtjylland graduate who moved on to Brentford and Augsburg, does the physical work. Brighton answer with 35-year-old Pascal Groß, back from Borussia Dortmund in January 2026, and 172cm Sweden international Yasin Ayari.
- The flanks could decide it. Coventry's right wing-back Milan van Ewijk climbed the Dutch ladder through Cambuur, ADO Den Haag and Heerenveen, while Chelsea academy product Jay Dasilva, just 170cm, covers the left. They run into Belgium's Maxim De Cuyper, whose left-footed delivery was honed at Club Brugge, and Turkey's Ferdi Kadıoğlu, whose stock rose sharply at EURO 2024.
- The Japanese interest is on the Coventry bench, where Tatsuhiro Sakamoto waits. The 29-year-old went from Montedio Yamagata to Cerezo Osaka and then Oostende in Belgium before crossing to England, and at 170cm he works in tight spaces with quick dribbling and takes defenders on from wide. Brighton's Kaoru Mitoma does not feature in the matchday squad.
- Both benches carry real weight. Coventry hold back Gustavo Hamer, who produced 19 goals and 24 assists in 132 appearances after joining in 2020 and has returned via Sheffield United, plus 23-year-old Loum Tchaouna, who reached England through Lazio. Brighton keep Matt O'Riley, a Scottish Premiership MVP during his Celtic days, and 195cm Canada international Promise David in reserve.
