Match Preview
- Two unbeaten sides meet level on five points. Newcastle sit 10th on goal difference of +2, Leeds 11th on +1, and both have the identical record of one win and two draws from three matches. Each has a game in hand on leaders Arsenal, who have 12 points from four, so victory here would push the winner up to eight points and into the top half.
- The contrast lies in how they have got there. Newcastle have scored six and conceded four, netting twice in every fixture: 2-2 at home to Liverpool, a 2-0 win at Tottenham and another 2-2 with Bournemouth. Leeds have scored just three and conceded two, winning 1-0 at Nottingham Forest before consecutive 1-1 draws with Brentford and Brighton, a profile built on tight margins.
- Leeds' 3-5-2 against Newcastle's 4-2-3-1 sets up a numerical battle in central midfield. The hosts field Ao Tanaka alongside Wales captain-material Ethan Ampadu, 26, who led the club to the Championship title in 2024-25, and the 194cm Anton Stach. Newcastle counter with a double pivot of Nico Gonzalez, 24, the Barcelona-schooled, Porto-developed Spain anchor, and 20-year-old academy graduate Lewis Miley, meaning the visiting front three must track back diligently.
- Japan international Ao Tanaka, 28, starts in the left-sided central role for Leeds. He arrived via Fortuna Dusseldorf after making his name at Kawasaki Frontale and was voted the club's Player of the Year in 2024-25. Averaging around 90 touches per game with a pass completion rate above 90 per cent, he sets the tempo as much as he covers ground, and his duel with the Gonzalez-Miley pairing will shape who controls the middle.
- Sean Longstaff is named on the Leeds bench for a reunion with the only professional club he had previously represented. The 28-year-old box-to-box midfielder stands 187cm and offers relentless running, defensive work and a shot from distance. Should he be introduced, it will be a pointed cameo against the side where he spent so many years.
- Leeds pair Noah Okafor, 26, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, 29, up front. The Switzerland forward has Salzburg, AC Milan and a Scudetto-winning loan at Napoli on his CV, and offers explosive pace from the left channel, while the 189cm Calvert-Lewin spent nine years leading the Everton line with his aerial presence and hold-up play. Sven Botman, 193cm and left-footed, and the 194cm Malick Thiaw must handle that mix of height and speed.
- Yoane Wissa leads the Newcastle line. The 30-year-old DR Congo international set Brentford's club record for Premier League goals, thrives on runs in behind and finishes with either foot. He will be tested by a Leeds back three featuring 23-year-old Tarik Muharemovic, a Juventus academy product who played 32 Serie A games and scored twice last season for Sassuolo, and Nico Elvedi, a 65-cap Switzerland centre-back who reads danger as well as anyone.
- The flanks promise plenty. Newcastle have Harvey Barnes, 28, cutting in from the left onto his right foot after making his name at Leicester, and 31-year-old Jacob Murphy delivering from the right, a key contributor to their 2025 Carabao Cup success. Leeds answer with Sweden's Gabriel Gudmundsson, who reached the Champions League round of 16 with Lille, and Jayden Bogle, whose six goals and four assists in 2024-25 underlined his attacking output from wing-back.
- Both goalkeepers are still in their early twenties. James Trafford, 23 and 192cm, came through Manchester City's academy, impressed at Burnley and was reclaimed by City through a buy-back clause before this move. Newcastle's Lukas Hornicek is 24 and 198cm, a Czech international who joined Braga for a record fee from Pardubice. Leeds have conceded twice in three games, Newcastle four, so consistency behind the defence matters.
- The benches could decide it. Leeds can call on Wales winger Daniel James, their Player of the Year in 2024-25 and one of the quickest players in the division, Brenden Aaronson, who hit a career-best nine goals that same promotion season, and the left-footed set-piece threat of Harry Wilson. Newcastle have Joe Willock, the Arsenal academy graduate known for late runs into the box, and Jacob Ramsey, a European Under-21 Championship winner signed from Aston Villa.
