Match Preview
- Only one point separates these sides: Chelsea sit sixth on seven points from two wins, one draw and one defeat, with Brentford seventh on six after a win and three draws. Arsenal and Manchester City have both banked 12 points from four games, so neither side here can afford to drift out of touch with the top of the table.
- Brentford are still unbeaten, but momentum has stalled. After thrashing Tottenham 3-0 on the opening weekend, the Bees have drawn three in a row: 1-1 at Leeds, 1-1 at home to Sunderland and 2-2 at Bournemouth. Seven scored and four conceded gives them a +3 goal difference, yet only six points to show for it.
- Chelsea have been box office and vulnerable in equal measure, scoring 10 but shipping nine in four matches. They won a 3-2 thriller at Fulham and a 4-3 shootout at home to Brighton, lost 2-1 at Arsenal, then were pegged back to 2-2 by Hull City at home. A goal difference of just +1 hints at the defensive work still to be done.
- Jordan Henderson returns to a former club at the age of 36. The central midfielder had a spell at Brentford in a career that also took in Sunderland, Al-Ettifaq and Ajax, and it was at Liverpool that he captained the side to Premier League and Champions League glory. His organisation and engine remain Chelsea's insurance policy in the four-man band.
- The tactical crux is Brentford's 4-2-3-1 against Chelsea's 3-4-2-1. Vitaly Janelt, the 28-year-old left-footer with over 100 Premier League appearances, and 22-year-old Ukraine international Yehor Yarmoliuk must track Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers in the pockets behind Danny Welbeck. If that double pivot is bypassed, Chelsea's creators will feast.
- Igor Thiago leads the line for Brentford at 6ft 3in. The Brazilian was named UECL Young Player of the Season at Club Brugge and won a Premier League Player of the Month award in 2025-26. He faces a back three of left-footed Levi Colwill, the 190cm Maxence Lacroix and Wesley Fofana, whose recovery pace is among the best in the division when fit.
- Brentford's defence is unconventional. Keane Lewis-Potter, a natural left winger at just 170cm, operates on the left, Italy's Michael Kayode, a Fiorentina academy product who turned a January 2025 loan into a permanent move, takes the right, and 198cm Norway international Kristoffer Ajer partners 20-year-old Austrian Yannik Schuster in the middle. Containing Pedro Neto's one-v-one dribbling will be their sternest test.
- Contrasting goalkeepers are on show. Caoimhin Kelleher, 27, lifted Premier League and Champions League medals at Liverpool and is renowned for shootout heroics, while Chelsea's Emiliano Martinez, 34 and 195cm tall, was the hero of Argentina's 2022 World Cup triumph and is comfortable enough with his feet to start attacks.
- There is serious firepower held back too. Brentford's bench features Dango Ouattara, a club-record signing from Bournemouth with a fierce left foot, plus Fabio Carvalho and Mali anchor Mamadou Sangare. Chelsea can call on 19-year-old Estevao, the Palmeiras prodigy nicknamed 'Messinho', and ex-Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens.
