Founded as Newton LFC in 1989 and affiliated with Liverpool FC in 1994, the club won back-to-back WSL titles in 2013 and 2014. After a difficult period that included relegation to the Championship in 2022, they returned to the top flight after one season and are now rebuilding.

From the 2025-26 season, the team's new home is the BrewDog Stadium in St Helens (capacity 18,000), marking their first venue with dedicated changing facilities for the women's team.

Following the departure of Matt Beard in February 2025, former Manchester City Women manager Gareth Taylor was appointed in August 2025. Beard, who built Liverpool's WSL-winning dynasty, left unexpectedly mid-season. Taylor brings extensive experience from his time managing at the top of the women's game.
