Match Preview
- The WSL season opens with a heavyweight fixture: Sonia Bompastor's Chelsea host Andrée Jeglertz's Manchester City. Chelsea are marshalled by 32-year-old captain Millie Bright, the WSL's all-time appearance record holder at centre-back, while City answer with Alex Greenwood, a centre-back who has passed 100 England caps. Both are set-piece hubs as well as defensive anchors.
- Keira Walsh faces a former club. The 28-year-old holding midfielder came through Blackburn Rovers before establishing herself at Manchester City, then moved to Barcelona and on to Chelsea in 2025. Her tempo control and long-range passing are among the best in the world, and whether she can dictate circulation against her old side will shape the rhythm of the match.
- Three Japanese internationals start this one. Maika Hamano, 21, lines up on the right wing for Chelsea after a path that ran from Cerezo Osaka Sakai to INAC Kobe Leonessa, and she won both the Golden Ball and the Silver Boot at the U-20 Women's World Cup. City counter with Yui Hasegawa and goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita in their own starting eleven.
- The holding-midfield duel is the tactical centrepiece. Hasegawa, 28, captains Japan and reached 100 appearances for City after moving via Nippon TV Tokyo Verdy Beleza, West Ham and AC Milan. Her positional sense and passing accuracy make her a direct counterpart to Walsh, and whichever of the two dictates the middle third will likely decide who controls the ball.
- The goalkeeping matchup carries weight. Ayaka Yamashita, 29, is Japan's first-choice keeper and joined from INAC Kobe Leonessa, relying on quick reactions and sound positioning. At the other end, Hannah Hampton, 24, is England's number one after spells at Aston Villa and Birmingham City, strong in one-on-ones and commanding in her box at set pieces.
- City's front line is formidable. Khadija Shaw, 28, is Jamaica's captain, a 180cm striker who finishes with either foot and dominates in the air, signed originally from Bordeaux. Alongside her is Vivianne Miedema, 29, the WSL's all-time leading scorer and the Netherlands' record goalscorer, with Bristol City product Lauren Hemp providing pace and dribbling from the left.
- Chelsea's threat starts with Sandy Baltimore. The 25-year-old France winger came through the PSG academy and debuted at 16; at 156cm she relies on agility and a precise left-footed delivery. In midfield, Scotland's Erin Cuthbert, 27, who joined Chelsea at 18 from Glasgow City, brings the running volume and pressing intensity to disrupt City's build-up.
- Chelsea's defence shows off their 2025 summer business. Ellie Carpenter, the 25-year-old Australia right-back who won the Champions League at Lyon, supplies overlapping runs on that side, with Euro 2025 winner Niamh Charles, 26, on the left. Bright partners Sweden's Nathalie Björn, 28, who arrived from Everton in January 2024, in the middle.
- City mix youth with pedigree at the back. Left-footed Greenwood, 31, takes the penalties, free-kicks and corners and has Lyon and Manchester United on her CV. Around her are 22-year-old Canada defender Jade Rose, signed from San Diego Wave, and 20-year-old academy graduate Gracie Prior, with Netherlands right-back Kerstin Casparij — recruited from FC Twente as Lucy Bronze's successor — completing the line.
- Both benches can swing it. Chelsea can turn to Australia captain Sam Kerr, Sweden's Player of the Year Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, Germany midfielder Sjoeke Nüsken and Catarina Macario, a Champions League winner with Lyon. City hold Spain left-back Leila Ouahabi, who collected five league titles and a Champions League at Barcelona, plus 34-year-old WSL veteran Laura Coombs.
