Match Preview
- Six Japanese internationals are involved in this Matchday 2 fixture. City start Yui Hasegawa and keep goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita and 21-year-old Aoba Fujino on the bench, while Brighton name Moeka Minami in the back line with Takako Seike and September signing Fuka Tsunoda among the substitutes. Few club matches anywhere in Europe put this many Japanese players on the same pitch.
- The midfield battle should shape the game. Hasegawa, the Nadeshiko Japan captain and a holding midfielder who has already passed 100 appearances for City, controls tempo through positioning and passing accuracy, with Denmark's Laura Blindkilde Brown alongside her. Brighton counter with Maisie Symonds, handed the captaincy in the summer of 2025 at just 22, and Fran Kirby, the two-time PFA Player of the Year who won multiple titles at Chelsea.
- Minami, 26, anchors Brighton's defence after joining permanently in June 2025 from AS Roma, where she won back-to-back Serie A titles. She faces Khadija Shaw, the 180cm Jamaica captain who strikes with both feet, and Vivianne Miedema, the WSL's all-time leading scorer. The leadership Minami showed as captain at the U-20 World Cup will be tested for 90 minutes.
- Brighton now carry three graduates of Urawa Reds Ladies. Minami and Seike, who swept the WE League's scoring title, MVP award and Best XI in 2023-24, were team-mates in Japan and are reunited on the south coast. Tsunoda, a 20-year-old holding midfielder who won two WE League titles with Urawa, completed her move only in September 2025.
- Arsenal connections run through both squads. Miedema moved to City from the Gunners, and Austria right-back Laura Wienroither, on the City bench, also spent time at Arsenal. Brighton, meanwhile, field two Arsenal loanees: forward Michelle Agyemang and Sweden international Rosa Kafaji.
- The goalkeeping contrast is striking. City hand the gloves to 20-year-old academy product Khiara Keating, with Japan's first-choice keeper Ayaka Yamashita, 29, held in reserve. Brighton start Chiamaka Nnadozie, the 180cm Nigeria number one who arrived from Paris FC in the summer of 2025 and has become the backbone of their defence.
- The flanks offer another duel. Lauren Hemp, 25, attacks from the left for City with the pace and dribbling that have made her one of the WSL's defining wingers, while Kerstin Casparij, signed from FC Twente as Lucy Bronze's successor, overlaps and crosses from right-back. Brighton answer with Scotland wide player Rachel McLauchlan, whose crossing and work rate set the tone down her side.
- Brighton's attack is led by 19-year-old Michelle Agyemang, named best young player at EURO 2025 and a striker who scored 41 seconds into her senior England debut. Alongside her is Stanford graduate Madison Haley, 27. City meet them with a contrasting centre-back pairing: captain Alex Greenwood, a 100-cap England international and the side's designated set-piece taker, and 20-year-old Gracie Prior.
- Both benches carry game-changing attackers. City can call on Kerolin, the 2023 NWSL MVP and a Paris 2024 silver medallist, plus Aoba Fujino, who scored Japan's youngest-ever World Cup goal in 2023 and has twice been named WE League MVP. Brighton have Carla Camacho, a 20-year-old signed from Real Madrid in August 2025 and a U-17 World Cup winner.
