Match Preview
- City come into this one with a perfect record: five wins from five, 15 points, 16 goals scored and only six conceded for a goal difference of +10. They sit second purely because leaders Chelsea have played a game more for their 16 points, so a win here would take City to 18 and the summit. Brighton are 11th on five points from one win, two draws and two defeats.
- Brighton's recent form line reads L-D-D-L-W. They lost 1-0 at home to Arsenal on the opening weekend, drew 2-2 away at Birmingham City and 1-1 at home with Aston Villa, then went down 2-0 at London City Lionesses. Last time out everything clicked, with a 5-1 home rout of Charlton Athletic delivering their first win of the season.
- City's attacking output has been relentless: 4-2 at home against Liverpool in round three and another 4-2 against Arsenal in round five, either side of a 4-1 win away at Aston Villa. The one soft spot is at the other end, where six goals have gone in across five games — the 1-0 victory at Charlton is their only clean sheet, which gives Brighton something to aim at on the counter.
- Four Japan internationals start this match. City field goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita (31), holding midfielder Yui Hasegawa (29) and left-sided attacker Aoba Fujino (22), while Brighton name right winger Takako Seike (30). Hasegawa captains Japan and has already passed 100 appearances for City, while Seike became the first player in WSL history to score a hat-trick on her debut.
- The goalkeeping duel is worth watching on its own. Yamashita joined from INAC Kobe Leonessa and was named best goalkeeper at the 2026 Asian Cup, prized for her reflexes and positioning. At the other end stands Chiamaka Nnadozie (25), Nigeria's 180cm number one, who arrived from Paris FC in the summer of 2025 and collected a CAF award in 2025.
- The central battle is Khadija Shaw against Brighton's back line. The 29-year-old Jamaica captain is 180cm tall, comfortable shooting off either foot and overwhelming in the air. Facing her are Caitlin Hayes (31), the Republic of Ireland centre-back signed from Celtic in January 2025, and Manuela Vanegas (25), the left-footed Colombia international who can fill in at centre-back or left-back.
- In midfield, Hasegawa and Denmark international Laura Blindkilde (25) form City's double pivot against Maisie Symonds (23) and Jelena Čanković (31). Symonds came through Chelsea's academy and was made Brighton captain in the summer of 2025; Čanković won back-to-back WSL titles at Chelsea and has also played for Barcelona. Ahead of them, City use England's Grace Clinton (22), signed from Manchester United, in the advanced band.
- Brighton's creative spark comes from Fran Kirby (33) and Olaug Tvedten (26). Nicknamed "Mini Messi", Kirby collected a long list of honours at Chelsea and was twice voted PFA Player of the Year before moving to the south coast in 2024. Tvedten twice finished as Toppserien top scorer in Norway, hitting 52 goals in four seasons and winning the league's player of the year award in 2024, and has been Brighton's main goal threat since joining in January 2026.
- Width could decide this. City have Lauren Hemp (26) on the left with Euro 2025 winner Niamh Charles (27) overlapping behind her, while Kerstin Casparij (26), the Netherlands international signed from FC Twente, pushes forward from right-back. Brighton answer with Gabby George (29) at right-back, a Manchester-born utility player with Manchester United and Everton on her CV, who will share defensive duties down that flank with Seike.
- Two Japan internationals miss out entirely. Brighton's Moeka Minami (27), a centre-back who won back-to-back Serie A Femminile titles with Roma and reunited with Seike from their Urawa Reds days when she signed permanently in June 2025, is neither in the XI nor on the bench. City right-back Risa Shimizu (30), back at the club after a loan spell at Liverpool, is also absent from the matchday squad.
