Founded in 1913 as the sports club for employees of the Philips electronics company, PSV Eindhoven's full name — Philips Sport Vereniging — reveals a corporate origin unique in European football. The club has played on the same site since its inception, in a neighbourhood once known as Philipsdorp (Philips Village) built for factory workers.
PSV lifted the European Cup in 1988 under Guus Hiddink, and has been home to legends like Ronaldo, Romario, Ruud van Nistelrooy, and Arjen Robben. As one of the Dutch "Big Three" alongside Ajax and Feyenoord, PSV's 27 Eredivisie titles place them among the most decorated clubs in the Netherlands.
Peter Bosz, appointed in 2022, is a disciple of Johan Cruyff's attacking philosophy. His preferred 4-3-3 formation prioritises ball possession while maintaining vertical thrust, with fluid positional interchanges across the front line.
In possession, PSV morph into a 1-2-3-5 shape with five attackers flooding the box. Defensively, a high press suffocates opposition build-up. The approach yielded a league-best 103 goals in 2024-25, averaging over three per match.
PSV have occupied the same ground since 1913. What began as a modest wooden stand for 550 spectators has grown through major renovations in the 1970s and 1990s — plus the completion of the four corners in 2002 — into a modern 35,000-seat venue.
The stadium hosted three UEFA Euro 2000 group matches and the 2006 UEFA Cup Final. It stands as a monument to the intertwined histories of Eindhoven, Philips, and PSV.
PSV's history is inseparable from the Philips corporation. Though Philips relinquished the stadium naming rights in 2016, the club name still carries the company's identity, and the iconic red-and-white stripes echo Philips' corporate colours. In recent years, investment from the Carlos Slim family has diversified the ownership structure, but the "company town club" identity endures.
