Fagiano Okayama was established in 2003 by members of the Okayama Prefecture Football Association and former players from the Kawasaki Steel Mizushima football club. A true community-owned club with no corporate parent company, Fagiano was built from the ground up through the passion and support of the local community. The name "Fagiano" is Italian for "pheasant," the official bird of Okayama Prefecture.
Making their competitive debut in 2004, the club joined J2 in 2009. After 16 years of patient building in the second division, Fagiano achieved their historic first-ever J1 promotion on 7 December 2024, defeating Vegalta Sendai 2-0 in the promotion play-off final at their home ground. The achievement ended Okayama Prefecture's status as a "J1 blank prefecture" and was one of the most celebrated promotions in recent J-League history.
Under manager Takayuki Kiyama, the club refined a disciplined counter-attacking style built on an exceptionally well-organised defence -- a system widely praised as "second to none when it comes to defending." This identity carried the club from the lower reaches of J2 all the way to the top flight.
Fagiano's debut J1 season in 2025 began with a statement: a 2-1 victory over Machida Zelvia on 18 February, their first-ever J1 win. Operating on one of the smallest budgets in the league and without a major corporate backer, Fagiano's organised defensive structure and collective spirit allowed them to compete with far wealthier opponents throughout the campaign.
The club finished 13th in J1 (12W 9D 17L, 45 points, 34 goals scored, 43 conceded), comfortably securing survival in their inaugural top-flight season. It was a campaign that earned widespread admiration for a club that proved brains and unity can overcome financial limitations.
The club's home ground is JFE Hare no Kuni Stadium (formerly City Light Stadium), the Okayama Prefectural Athletic Stadium with a capacity of approximately 20,000 (15,479 registered J-League seats). JFE Steel acquired the naming rights in 2025.
A key feature of the venue is its outstanding transport links: just 1.5 km from Okayama Station, a Shinkansen hub on the Sanyo line. Fans attending a 14:00 kick-off can be on a bullet train home by 16:30, reaching Osaka by early evening or Tokyo by night. The club has also proposed plans for a purpose-built football stadium, with discussions ongoing about the future of matchday facilities in Okayama.
