Originally founded in 1938 as the football department of Toyo Kogyo (now Mazda), the club turned professional in 1992 as one of the J.League's "Original Ten" founding members. The name "Sanfrecce" combines the Japanese word "san" (three) with the Italian "frecce" (arrows), a reference to the legendary parable of the "Three Arrows" attributed to Mori Motonari, the feudal lord of Aki Province (modern-day Hiroshima). The story teaches that while a single arrow breaks easily, three bundled together cannot be snapped -- symbolizing the unity of citizens, government, and business.

Sanfrecce won three J1 League titles in 2012, 2013, and 2015, establishing themselves as one of the dominant forces of the decade. Known as a development-focused club, they have produced numerous Japanese internationals through their acclaimed academy, including legends like Hisato Sato, the Morisaki twins, and Toshihiro Aoyama. The club also lifted the Levain Cup in 2022 and 2025.

Opened in February 2024, Edion Peace Wing Hiroshima is a purpose-built football stadium located in Hiroshima's central Chuo Park. With a capacity of 28,520, it replaced the old Edion Stadium Hiroshima (Hiroshima Big Arch), which was located far from the city center and plagued by poor access.

The stadium's design is inspired by "wings of hope," reflecting the peace message of Hiroshima as a city that rose from the devastation of the atomic bomb. The close proximity between stands and pitch creates one of the best atmospheres in the J.League. Electronics retailer Edion holds the naming rights under a 10-year, 100-million-yen-per-year agreement. Since its opening, the venue has consistently drawn strong crowds and become a new landmark for Hiroshima's sporting culture.
