Established in 1991, Shimizu S-Pulse was one of the J.League's "Original Ten" founding members. Uniquely among those ten clubs, S-Pulse was the only one without a corporate parent company -- a true community club from its inception. The initial squad was composed entirely of players from Shizuoka Prefecture, a testament to the region's deep football roots. The name combines "S" (for Shimizu, Soccer, and Shizuoka) with "Pulse" (heartbeat), capturing the club's identity as the living pulse of its community.

The club won the Asian Cup Winners' Cup in 1999, claiming an international trophy. However, the road has not always been smooth: S-Pulse were relegated to J2 in 2015 and again in 2022. They bounced back emphatically in 2024, winning the J2 title (26W 4D 8L, 68 goals) to earn promotion back to J1 after a three-year absence.

Shizuoka Prefecture is known as Japan's "Soccer Kingdom," having produced more national high school championship winners than any other region. The Shimizu district sits at the heart of this culture, renowned for its youth development programs. Legends such as Kazuyoshi Miura, Hidetoshi Nakata, and Shinji Ono all have roots in this football-obsessed region.

S-Pulse's home ground, IAI Stadium Nihondaira, is perched on the hills of Nihondaira with views of Mount Fuji on clear days. The 20,299-capacity football-specific stadium opened in 1991 and has been the club's home since the J.League's inaugural season. The tight proximity between stands and pitch creates an intimate atmosphere where the supporters' chants reach the players with full force.
