Club history

Founded in 1913 in Santander, Cantabria. Racing were one of the ten founder members of LaLiga in 1928-29 and have spent more than 40 seasons in the top division.

After relegation in 2011-12 came financial crisis and a fall to the third tier. Rebuilt with supporters closely involved in the club's governance, they are back in the top flight after 14 years.

2025-26 — first to be promoted

Racing won the Segunda División, confirming promotion on 16 May 2026 — the first of the three clubs to do so, under head coach José Alberto López.

They were consistent all season and did not surrender top spot in the closing weeks.

El Sardinero

El Sardinero holds around 22,000, close to the beach it shares a name with; wind off the Bay of Biscay can affect play.

The current ground was rebuilt in 1988. Supporters who remember the top flight now stand alongside those who only knew the third tier.

Canales comes home

The symbol of this promotion is Sergio Canales (#8, MF). Born near Santander and a Racing academy product, he went on to Real Madrid, Valencia, Real Sociedad and Real Betis, then Monterrey in Mexico, before returning to his first club on a deal to 2028.

A left-footed playmaker with Spain caps, he closes his career where it began — and provides the experience a newly promoted side needs.
