Founded in 1943, Nantes are eight-time Ligue 1 champions and one of France's most storied clubs. Their elegant passing style from the 1960s to 1980s, known as "jeu a la nantaise," set the standard for French football.

The 2000s brought decline, including relegation in 2007. A 2022 Coupe de France triumph offered a brief revival, but league struggles have continued. The Canaries are searching for a path back to their former glory.

Stade de la Beaujoire (37,473 capacity), nicknamed "La Jolie," opened in 1984 and hosted 1998 World Cup matches. Its distinctive circular design overlooks the Loire river and the city of Nantes.
